Australia and Japan Excel with Medals at AVC Beach Tour in Pingtung

Sports News

Teams receiving assistance from the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment program achieved significant success at Asia`s continental AVC Beach Tour event in Pingtung, Chinese Taipei, claiming four of the six available medals. Australian duos demonstrated particular strength, securing three of these medals, including both men`s and women`s gold.

In the men`s final, D’Artagnan Potts and Jack Pearse emerged victorious in an all-Australian showdown against compatriots Ben Hood and Joshua Howat. The women`s competition saw Jasmine Fleming and Stefanie Fejes triumph, adding another gold to Australia`s tally. Japan`s Asami Shiba and Reika Murakami, also beneficiaries of the empowerment initiative, earned the women’s bronze medal. Thailand`s Charanrutwadee Patcharamainaruebhorn and Woranatchayakorn Phirachayakrailert secured the women`s silver, while Logan Jon Mister and Andrew Scott Johnson from the Northern Mariana Islands completed the men`s podium with bronze.

This impressive performance underscores the impact of the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment program. Volleyball Australia`s beach volleyball division has been granted $378,000 in coaching support for their national teams, and the Japan Volleyball Association`s beach volleyball department has received $84,000 in similar support. Both national teams have notably benefited from the guidance of American coach Steve Anderson.

Men`s Tournament Highlights

Bracket leaders D’Artagnan Potts and Jack Pearse showcased their dominance throughout the men’s tournament, winning all six of their matches without dropping a single set. Their sixth-seeded compatriots, Ben Hood and Joshua Howat, also had a strong run, reaching the final with a five-game winning streak. In the semifinals, Potts and Pearse defeated Logan Jon Mister and Andrew Scott Johnson of the Northern Mariana Islands 2-0 (21-17, 21-16), while Hood and Howat overcame Japan`s Takumi Takahashi and Jumpei Ikeda in a hard-fought 2-1 match (21-17, 16-21, 15-12).

The all-Australian men`s final was a closely contested affair, with Potts and Pearse ultimately securing the gold medal with a narrow 2-0 victory (21-19, 21-19) over Hood and Howat. Logan Jon Mister and Andrew Scott Johnson of the Northern Mariana Islands clinched the men`s bronze medal, defeating Takumi Takahashi and Jumpei Ikeda 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) in the third-place playoff.

Women`s Tournament Highlights

As the second seeds, they secured a 2-0 (21-18, 21-11) semifinal victory against Japan`s third-seeded Asami Shiba and Reika Murakami, who had also reached this stage without dropping a set.

The women`s gold medal match saw Fleming and Fejes triumph 2-0 (21-19, 21-15) over Thailand`s fifth-seeded Charanrutwadee Patcharamainaruebhorn and Woranatchayakorn Phirachayakrailert. The Thai pair had previously caused an upset in their semifinal, defeating top-seeded Australians Georgia Johnson and Elizabeth Alchin 2-0 (21-15, 21-14). Notably, the two sets lost by the Thai team in the final were their only set losses of the entire tournament.

Japan`s Asami Shiba and Reika Murakami secured the women`s bronze, overcoming Georgia Johnson and Elizabeth Alchin 2-1 (21-13, 21-17) in the third-place playoff.

The AVC Tour event in Chinese Taipei successfully hosted a total of 24 men`s teams and 21 women`s teams, representing 14 different national federations, highlighting the growing international participation in beach volleyball.
