BCCI Acts After Provocative Gestures from Haris Rauf, Sahibzada Farhan; Pakistan Retaliates with Counter-Complaint in Asia Cup Controversy

Cricket News

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has lodged an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) against Pakistani cricketers Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan. The complaint stems from what India considers provocative gestures made by the players during the recent Asia Cup Super 4 match between the two nations in Dubai last Sunday. Sources indicate that the BCCI submitted its complaint on Wednesday, which the ICC has acknowledged. Should Rauf and Farhan contest these allegations in writing, an ICC hearing will likely be convened, possibly requiring their appearance before Elite Panel Referee Richie Richardson.

In a tit-for-tat move, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly filed its own official complaint with the ICC. This complaint targets Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, accusing him of making “political” statements. Yadav`s comments, made after the September 14 game, expressed solidarity with victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and dedicated his team`s victory to the Indian Armed Forces involved in Operation Sindoor. The PCB`s complaint raises questions about the political nature of these remarks, though the timing of its submission – which must occur within seven days of the alleged comment – is still under scrutiny.

Player Gestures Under Scrutiny

During the September 21 match, Haris Rauf was observed making gestures simulating a crashing aircraft. This was interpreted as a mocking reference to India`s military actions, apparently in response to Indian fans chanting “Kohli, Kohli,” recalling the match-winning sixes Virat Kohli hit off Rauf in a 2022 T20 World Cup game. Furthermore, Rauf allegedly directed abusive language at Indian openers Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma during his bowling spell, to which the young batsmen reportedly responded with their performance.

Sahibzada Farhan, during the same fixture, drew criticism for his celebration which involved using his bat to mimic a machine gun firing. Farhan later downplayed the incident, stating to reporters, “That celebration was just a moment at that time. I do not do a lot of celebrations after scoring 50. But, it suddenly came to my mind that let`s do a celebration today. I did that. I don`t care about that.” Both Rauf and Farhan will be required to explain their actions at the impending ICC hearing and could face disciplinary sanctions if their explanations are deemed unsatisfactory under the code of conduct.

Naqvi`s Cryptic Social Media Post

Adding another layer to the controversy, Mohsin Naqvi, who serves as both Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Asian Cricket Council, posted a slow-motion video of Cristiano Ronaldo on social media platform `X` (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. The video shows Ronaldo making a gesture that some interpreted as an aircraft crashing, similar to Rauf`s on-field action. Naqvi, also Pakistan`s Interior Minister, is known for making potentially provocative statements concerning India. While Ronaldo`s gesture in the video could simply be him demonstrating how his free-kick dipped into the goal, its timing and Naqvi`s background have sparked further debate.

The fallout from these incidents and Naqvi`s post raises questions about future interactions, particularly whether the Indian team, now an Asia Cup finalist, will share a platform with the ACC Chairman. Both the BCCI and ICC leadership are aware of the escalating tensions, and it remains to be seen what official action, if any, will be taken regarding Naqvi`s conduct.
