The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, announced India`s squad for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia on Saturday. The announcement brought significant surprises, particularly the naming of Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. While Rohit and Virat Kohli were included in the ODI squad, Sharma will no longer lead the team. Equally notable was the omission of experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja from the ODI squad, leaving cricket fans around the world in shock.
Addressing Jadeja`s exclusion, Agarkar clarified that the decision was driven by the selection committee`s preference for including fewer spinners in the squad. He emphasized that Jadeja, despite his current omission, remains a crucial part of Team India`s future plans.
“He is very much in our plans, but there`s stiff competition for places. He was part of the Champions Trophy squad. Given the conditions and our current strategy to balance the team with players like Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav, we opted for fewer spinners, believing we won`t require more than that for spin options in Australia,” Agarkar stated during a press conference.
Agarkar further elaborated, “Jadeja is definitely still a key player for us, considering his all-round capabilities as a batter, bowler, and especially his exceptional fielding. This is a short, three-match series, and it`s impossible to include everyone. Regrettably, he misses out this time.”
This decision comes despite Jadeja`s recent brilliant performance in the first Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad, where he scored an unbeaten 104 runs and claimed four wickets, contributing significantly to India`s victory by an innings and 140 runs.
Earlier, in the Champions Trophy 2025, which India won by defeating New Zealand in the final, Jadeja played five matches and secured five wickets, showcasing his consistent performance on big stages.
