Boston Celtics Make Key Roster Adjustments: Niang Traded, Boucher to Join

Sports News

The Boston Celtics have reportedly sent Georges Niang, along with two second-round picks, to the Utah Jazz in exchange for rookie RJ Luis Jr. Niang`s departure marks his second trade this summer, having previously joined the Celtics from the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team deal that brought Kristaps Porziņģis to the Hawks. Niang is now returning to the Jazz, where he previously played for four seasons.

This trade is a strategic move by the Celtics to create more financial flexibility and distance themselves from the second tax apron, a key objective for the team this offseason. Earlier efforts included trading Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis, and the team is also not expected to bring back Al Horford. Georges Niang was slated to earn $8.2 million next season, and given the Celtics are reportedly moving away from being a serious title contender, a decision influenced by the stated absence of Jayson Tatum due to a torn Achilles, his salary became expendable.

In exchange, Boston acquires Luis, the 2025 Big East Player of the Year from St. John`s, who initially signed a two-way contract with the Jazz after going undrafted. However, the acquisition of Luis is secondary; the primary motivation for the Celtics was purely financial, successfully shedding salary by sending Niang to Utah.

From Utah`s perspective, they have effectively gained two future second-round draft picks by absorbing Niang`s one-year contract. He could either become a valuable trade asset closer to the February deadline or his contract will expire next summer, freeing up cap space.

Furthermore, the Celtics are expected to sign free agent forward Chris Boucher to a one-year, $3.3 million deal, according to ESPN. Boucher will provide much-needed frontcourt depth for Boston`s rotation, especially after the departures of Kristaps Porziņģis and Luke Kornet (who joined the Spurs), and the decision not to bring back Al Horford. Given the current limited options in the frontcourt for the upcoming season, Boucher is anticipated to receive significant playing time.

The move to trade Niang and potentially sign Boucher is a shrewd financial decision that aligns with the Celtics` immediate needs. All of Boston`s offseason maneuvers have aimed at conserving funds, yet President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens continues to make astute roster-building choices, even as the team seemingly moves away from being a top-tier title contender next season.
