Carlos Ulberg Eyes Magomed Ankalaev for Title Bout, Ahead of Pereira Rematch

Sports News

Carlos Ulberg has clearly identified his preferred opponent for a potential title shot, as he prepares for his upcoming fight this weekend. This Saturday at UFC Perth, Ulberg is set to headline the event against Dominick Reyes, a crucial bout that could bring him significantly closer to challenging for the championship.

However, the contest at RAC Arena is just one of several high-stakes matchups looming in the light heavyweight division. The intense rivalry between Alex Pereira and Magomed Ankalaev is escalating, building anticipation for their rematch scheduled for UFC 320 on October 4th. As numerous top contenders vie for the light heavyweight title, Ulberg, currently boasting an impressive winning streak, recently revealed his desired opponent for a championship encounter.

Ulberg Expresses Preference for Challenging Magomed Ankalaev Over Alex Pereira

Unlike his opponent Dominick Reyes, who is looking for a rematch for the belt, Carlos Ulberg still needs to solidify his standing against more of the division`s elite. Even with a victory on Saturday, his path to an immediate title shot isn`t guaranteed, especially with Jiri Prochazka and Khalil Rountree Jr. also set to clash at UFC 320. Nevertheless, Ulberg would undoubtedly enter the championship discussion.

During a recent interview on Submission Radio ahead of his fight week, Ulberg discussed the upcoming title rematch headlining UFC 320 in Las Vegas. He also disclosed which fighter he hopes emerges victorious from that bout, as he intends to challenge them for the title.

Despite common assumptions that his kickboxing background and the existing rivalry between ‘Poatan’ and his City Kickboxing gym would make Alex Pereira his preferred opponent, Ulberg has a different choice.

“I’ve always viewed [Magomed] Ankalaev as a significant threat. ‘Poatan’ is also formidable, possessing power and skill. However, if I had to choose, I’d prefer Ankalaev to win because I believe I know how to approach a fight with him.”

He further clarified that a fight against Pereira would still be an exciting prospect, but he speculates about the former champion`s longevity in the sport.

“That would be a massive fight, one I’ve always wanted because he’s a tough opponent. But honestly, from what I’ve gathered, I’m unsure about his long-term commitment. He’s achieved a lot in the UFC, and I just sense that Ankalaev might be around for a longer period.”

Ulberg`s Impressive Winning Streak Could Be His Strongest Argument Post-UFC Perth

Should Carlos Ulberg emerge victorious this Saturday in Perth, he will extend his winning streak to nine consecutive fights, a remarkable achievement that would rank among the best in light heavyweight history. Despite this impressive run, he hasn`t yet secured a title shot, primarily because some of his key victories haven`t generated the kind of viral moments that compel fans to loudly advocate for his next challenge.

In contrast, fighters like Jiri Prochazka and Khalil Rountree Jr. are known for consistently delivering thrilling performances and highlight-reel finishes, which often places them in a strong position for title contention.

Therefore, Ulberg must either deliver a definitive performance this weekend or, as he suggested in his Submission Radio interview, allow his exceptional winning record to speak for itself.

“Nine is a significant number. I possess nine lives; I am the ‘Black Jag’.”
