Charles Oliveira achieved a feat no one else had managed. Saturday’s UFC Rio event was a triumphant homecoming for one of Brazil`s most revered mixed martial arts stars.
Just months after a tough title defeat to Ilia Topuria, Oliveira made a powerful return, besting Mateusz Gamrot in front of an ecstatic home crowd at Farmasi Arena. `Do Bronx` proved his doubters wrong following the UFC 317 outcome by accomplishing something unprecedented in Gamrot`s career.
Oliveira Becomes First to Finish Mateusz Gamrot in 29 Fights
At UFC Rio, Charles Oliveira secured his first finish since June 2023 with a second-round rear-naked choke submission. This victory further extended his lead for the most stoppages in Octagon history.
The win also saw `Do Bronx` tie the legendary Mirko Cro Cop’s record for most finishes across Zuffa promotions (UFC, Pride, WEC, Strikeforce), surpassing both Wanderlei Silva and Donald Cerrone with his 21st stoppage victory.
Gamrot`s tap-out brought an end to an impressive 29-fight streak during which he had never been finished. His three previous losses in those bouts were all by decision. With this, Oliveira became the very first fighter to put Gamrot away inside the distance, a remarkable feat achieved in the Polish star`s 30th professional fight.
Charles Oliveira Challenges Max Holloway for BMF Title
After yet another record-setting and streak-ending performance in the cage, `Do Bronx` immediately set his sights on another prominent name in UFC history.
During his Octagon interview at UFC Rio, Oliveira publicly challenged Max Holloway. The Brazilian fan favorite expressed his desire for a rematch against `Blessed` a decade after their initial encounter, stating: “Hey Hunter (Campbell), Charles Oliveira vs. Max Holloway. BMF (title). Let’s make it happen.”
