Chris Paul Explains His “No-Brainer” Return to Clippers and Reunion with James Harden

Sports News

Chris Paul is set to embark on his 21st NBA season, rejoining the Los Angeles Clippers after an eight-year hiatus. While his return evokes a strong sense of nostalgia, it`s crucial to acknowledge that he`s stepping into a vastly different environment with the current Clippers roster.

When Paul last played for the Clippers, they still shared an arena with the Los Angeles Lakers. Furthermore, Paul will no longer be the primary focal point of the franchise, a role he hasn`t held since departing L.A. in 2017. He is now joining a team built around stars Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, and for only the second time in his illustrious Hall of Fame career, he will embrace a role coming off the bench.

However, on Monday, during his re-introduction as a Clipper, the 40-year-old Paul`s discussion wasn`t primarily focused on potential lineups, rotations, or team expectations. Instead, the dominant sentiment was his palpable excitement about returning home to play for the franchise where he spent a significant portion of his career.

Paul characterized the decision as remarkably straightforward.

“It was a no-brainer,” Paul stated. “I had an interview just prior to this, and I was discussing how, after being in this lifestyle for an extended period, many people attempt to dictate your narrative. I was on vacation with my family, seeing all the reports suggesting things like, ‘He’ll only join if he’s starting,’ or ‘if he’s doing this.’ For me, the overwhelming gratitude I feel for having played this long made the easiest decision clear: it’s about my family, who are right here. It’s about being able to spend more time with them while still having the opportunity to compete for a championship.”

Paul artfully dodged inquiries about potential retirement after the upcoming season, emphasizing his immediate focus on the joy of being with his family full-time. Throughout his tenures with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, and most recently, the San Antonio Spurs, Paul had lived separately from his family – a situation that is now changing.

Upon entering free agency after his season in San Antonio, Paul unequivocally stated that his primary goal was to play as close to his Los Angeles home as possible. Given this priority, his move to the Clippers seemed almost inevitable, as the convenience of driving home to his family after a game is unparalleled – a luxury he hasn`t had in six years.

“To be completely honest, I wanted to return and play here by any means necessary,” Paul revealed. “I wasn’t even concerned about the team’s exact composition; I just wanted to be home, here with the Clippers. I’m incredibly enthusiastic about the team’s offseason acquisitions, including [Bradley Beal], Brook Lopez, and all the young talent. I’ve spoken with James [Harden] and Kawhi [Leonard], and I’m even more excited about what I believe we can achieve.”

Chris Paul`s Role and Fit with the Revamped Clippers

The Clippers undeniably bolstered their roster this offseason, bringing in Beal, Lopez, Paul, and John Collins. While this assemblage of talent might evoke a sense of a team from the 2010s, such depth could prove to be L.A.`s crucial advantage in the formidable Western Conference. However, the Clippers` championship aspirations have historically been hampered not by a lack of depth, but by injuries; should Leonard face health issues, the team`s prospects diminish significantly.

Beyond health concerns, the Clippers will also need to manage the array of new personalities now present in their locker room. Although Paul is past his prime, he remains renowned as a vocal leader in every team environment. His fierce competitiveness, however, doesn`t always align with everyone, and he has previously had publicized tense exchanges with Harden that circulated widely on social media.

Following the announcement of Paul`s signing, a particular interaction from his and Harden`s time in Houston resurfaced: Paul attempting a fist bump, only for Harden to swat his hand away, leading to what appeared to be an in-game disagreement.

On Monday, Paul addressed the viral video, attributing the incident to the competitive nature shared by both players.

“We discussed our history in Houston, and it’s amusing because that particular clip, while circulating widely, was just one example; there were many funnier moments, but that simply defined our relationship,” Paul explained. “I believe that dynamic was key to making that team so successful. We challenged each other in various situations, but I can honestly say that team was one of the most enjoyable I’ve ever been a part of. And James is someone who practically lives in the gym. So, it feels wild to get this opportunity again after those two years and the success we achieved. We certainly felt we had unfinished business, and now we get a chance to address that here.”

The Clippers, having finished last season with a 50-32 record and exiting the first round in a seven-game series against the Denver Nuggets, are poised to be one of the most compelling teams in the Western Conference next season. Paul’s addition to the rotation is just one factor contributing to this intrigue. Despite concerns regarding injuries and an aging roster, a fully healthy Clippers squad could genuinely contend with the defending champion Thunder in the West. Their current odds to win the title next season are +1800 at FanDuel, placing them sixth in the Western Conference.

While many elements must align perfectly for such a scenario to unfold, Paul evidently believes this team possesses the potential to mount a legitimate championship run next season.
