Dana White Declines to Sign Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Protégé After Contender Series Victory

Sports News

During the latest episode of the Contender Series, UFC President Dana White extended contracts to four promising fighters. Damian Pinas, Louis Jourdain, Christopher Alvidrez, and Kurtis Campbell all secured their spots in the elite MMA promotion, impressing the UFC boss with their performances on Tuesday night.

However, one notable winner did not receive an offer: Rashid Vagabov (14-2), a fighter closely associated with Khabib Nurmagomedov`s team. Despite entering the card as the biggest favorite and winning every round, Vagabov was unable to secure a definitive finish against his opponent.

Dana White Explains Rejection of Khabib`s Teammate

UFC President Dana White openly expressed his dissatisfaction with Rashid Vagabov`s conduct during the fight, particularly his decision to verbally engage with White from within the octagon. The 27-year-old fighter displayed effective striking and superior wrestling, controlling his opponent for the entire 15-minute duration. While his victory was a clear unanimous decision (30-27 across all scorecards), White indicated he had expected a more emphatic and decisive performance from a prospect of Vagabov`s touted caliber.

“Let`s start with Rashid,” White stated as he began awarding UFC contracts post-fight. “You were a 7-1 favorite, talking to me during the fight, telling me you`re going to be a world champion, all while struggling to finish the guy who was a 7-1 underdog.”

“Not tonight, my friend. Maybe again. You`re obviously a talented guy. Get back in the gym, and maybe we`ll see you again. You`re young.”

This situation is not unprecedented, as White has previously denied contracts to victorious fighters. Brendan Loughnane, for example, famously went on to become a PFL champion after White rejected him in June 2019. Despite a dominant Contender Series win, Loughnane was passed over due to White`s displeasure with his fighting style.

It remains to be seen whether Vagabov will attempt to impress White again in a future Contender Series appearance or choose to forge an alternative career path, potentially mirroring Brendan Loughnane`s success outside the UFC.
