San Antonio Spurs` star guard De`Aaron Fox has officially agreed to a substantial four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension. The agreement, confirmed by his agent to ESPN`s Shams Charania, ensures Fox remains with the Spurs long-term after being acquired by the team during the trade deadline this past February. This pivotal deal prevents him from entering unrestricted free agency next summer, solidifying a core piece for the franchise.
The 27-year-old guard had previously been eligible for an extension with his former team, the Sacramento Kings, last summer. At that time, he notably declined an offer that would have added $165 million and three years to his existing rookie-max contract. Fox initially signed a five-year, $163 million deal in 2020, shortly after Sacramento selected Tyrese Haliburton as the 12th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
Last season, Fox participated in 62 games, posting impressive averages of 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds. Following his trade to the Spurs, he played in 17 games, averaging 19.7 points per game before his season concluded prematurely in mid-March due due to finger surgery.
With Fox now committed for the foreseeable future, the San Antonio Spurs solidify a dynamic backcourt partner for their superstar big man, Victor Wembanyama. Despite the Spurs missing the playoffs for the past six consecutive seasons, there`s significant optimism building that this upcoming season could finally mark their return to playoff contention.
Further bolstering their future, the Spurs leveraged their success in May`s draft lottery to select point guard Dylan Harper as the No. 2 overall pick. Given the established presence of Fox and the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, it`s quite possible that Harper might begin his rookie campaign coming off the bench. Regardless, San Antonio now boasts a long-term star guard in Fox and another promising talent in Harper ready to contribute to their developing roster.
