Dustin Poirier unexpectedly hints at a return to fighting mere months after UFC retirement

Sports News

Dustin Poirier, the former interim UFC lightweight champion, appears to be contemplating a return to combat sports, despite officially retiring from the UFC only a few months ago.

Earlier this year, Poirier made what was believed to be his final appearance in the Octagon at UFC 318. He faced Max Holloway for the BMF title in Louisiana but was unable to secure a victory, as Holloway dominated the five-round contest to retain his championship.

Since his retirement, “The Diamond” has openly discussed his internal struggle, frequently reconsidering his decision to step away from the sport.

Dustin Poirier`s surprise call for a boxing match

Interestingly, Poirier had previously suggested that after retirement, he might consider experimenting with performance-enhancing substances, drawing a comparison to Donald Cerrone`s post-fighting career. However, his recent statements indicate a different direction.

Just weeks after stepping away, ‘The Diamond’ has now hinted at a significant comeback to fighting. This follows the recent announcement that Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing has secured an exclusive broadcast deal with Paramount, mirroring the UFC’s own new agreement.

Poirier publicly stated on X, “Zuffa Boxing, 12 rounds me and Nathaniel I’d do it. Only 1 more fight I’d take.”

The rivalry between Poirier and former UFC standout Nate Diaz has simmered for years, with numerous potential matchups failing to materialize during their respective UFC careers.

Diaz reignited this long-standing feud after Poirier’s retirement earlier this year, publicly mocking his loss and once again stoking the flames for a potential clash.

Diaz’s last UFC bout was in 2022, where he defeated Tony Ferguson. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited his return, often hoping for a definitive trilogy fight against Conor McGregor.

Could Dustin Poirier transition to professional boxing?

In recent years, it has become common for retired UFC fighters to make their combat sports comeback in the boxing ring. Poirier, known for his strong striking throughout his UFC career, possesses skills that could translate effectively to boxing.

A boxing match would be particularly fitting if he faced another former UFC competitor. Nate Diaz, given his recent forays into the boxing world, appears to be an ideal opponent for Poirier`s potential return to action.
