At the women`s Busan Gwangalli Futures event on the Beach Pro Tour, teams supported by the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment program dominated, securing all podium spots. Japan`s Ren and Non Matsumoto claimed their second consecutive gold, following their triumph at the Qidong Futures in June. Silver went to Norway`s Nina Pavlova and Sunniva Helland-Hansen, with Czechia`s Anna Pospisilova and Daniela Mokra earning bronze, completing a strong showing for Empowerment-backed teams in Korea.
This remarkable success highlights the significant impact of FIVB`s Empowerment initiative. The Japan Volleyball Association received $84,000 for coach support, with American coach Steve Anderson guiding their national teams. Norway`s national federation, Norges Volleyballforbund, received $252,000 in coach support, with Bendik Gabriel Huus leading the women`s teams, plus an additional $6,000 for a coach development program. The Czech Volleyball Federation benefited from $168,000 for their women`s beach volleyball teams and $24,000 for coach development, with Argentinean coach Sebastian Menegozzo providing expertise. These strategic investments clearly paid off on the court.
Ren and Non Matsumoto`s journey to gold was nearly flawless. They secured four consecutive straight-set wins, including a dominant 2-0 (21-16, 21-15) semifinal victory over Czechia`s Pospisilova and Mokra. In the final against Norway`s Pavlova and Helland-Hansen, the Japanese pair dropped their only set of the tournament, but quickly recovered to win 2-1 (17-21, 21-9, 15-11), securing their second Beach Pro Tour gold. They also hold two silver medals from previous Tour events, showcasing their consistent performance.
The Norwegian duo, Pavlova and Helland-Hansen, reached the final despite a pool play loss. They defeated Vanuatu`s Majabelle Lawac and Sherysyn Toko 2-0 (21-15, 22-20) in the semifinal. This marked their first Beach Pro Tour medal as a pair; notably, it was only Pavlova`s second appearance on the Tour, and Helland-Hansen`s first medal despite more extensive Beach Pro Tour experience, underscoring a breakthrough performance.
In the bronze medal match, Pospisilova and Mokra engaged in a tough battle, ultimately overcoming Lawac and Toko 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 16-14) to claim their first Beach Pro Tour podium finish as a team, solidifying their presence among the top contenders.
The Busan Gwangalli Futures saw 25 women`s teams from nine nations compete. Looking ahead, upcoming Futures events are scheduled for August 20-23 in Bujumbura, Burundi, and August 21-24 in Brno, Czechia, promising more exciting beach volleyball action.
