England`s versatile cricketer, Chris Woakes, 36, has declared his immediate retirement from international cricket. He stated his intention to continue playing county cricket and pursue franchise opportunities.
Since his debut in 2013, Woakes has played 217 matches for England, notably contributing to their 2019 ICC Men`s World Cup victory with three crucial wickets against New Zealand at Lord`s. He was also a key member of the squad that secured the 2022 ICC Men`s T20 World Cup title by defeating Pakistan in Melbourne.
Woakes` Official Statement
“The time has arrived, and I have concluded that now is the appropriate moment for me to step away from international cricket.”
He reflected on his career with immense pride, stating:
“Representing England was a childhood dream, nurtured in my backyard, and I feel incredibly privileged to have fulfilled it. Donning the Three Lions and sharing the pitch with teammates, many of whom have become lifelong friends over the past 15 years, will always be a source of immense pride.”
Woakes added:
“My debut in Australia back in 2011 feels like only yesterday – indeed, time truly flies when you`re enjoying yourself. Winning two World Cups and participating in memorable Ashes series were achievements I scarcely imagined, and the memories and celebrations shared with my teammates will forever be cherished.”
He extended his heartfelt gratitude to his family:
“To my Mum and Dad, my wife Amie, and our daughters Laila and Evie, thank you for your steadfast love, support, and sacrifices throughout the years. Your contributions were indispensable.”
He also acknowledged his wider support system:
“To the fans, my coaches, teammates, and all the unsung heroes behind the scenes – both at England and Warwickshire – who supported my journey to play for my country, your guidance and camaraderie have meant everything to me.”
Woakes concluded by reiterating his future plans:

Career Highlights and Statistics
His Test career saw him play 62 matches, where he claimed 192 wickets, including five instances of taking five wickets in an innings. He also notably scored a Test century against India at Lord`s in 2018.
In One Day Internationals, Woakes secured 173 wickets across 122 games. In 33 T20 Internationals, he took 31 wickets.
