EuroBasket 2025: Semifinalists Confirmed, Favorites Out as Tournament Nears Climax

The EuroBasket 2025 basketball tournament has reached its pinnacle, with the final four teams now determined. Germany, Finland, Greece, and Türkiye are set to compete for the championship title, which will be awarded on Sunday. The competition has drawn numerous talented NBA players. Among the prominent stars still in contention are Franz Wagner of the Orlando Magic (Germany), Lauri Markkanen of the Utah Jazz (Finland), Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks (Greece), and Alperen Sengun of the Houston Rockets (Türkiye).

However, this tournament will also be remembered for the early elimination of two of its biggest stars in the knockout stages. Nikola Jokić and the Serbian national team, considered pre-tournament favorites, were unexpectedly defeated by Lauri Markkanen`s Finland in the Round of 16. Luka Dončić led Slovenia to the quarterfinals, but a strong fourth-quarter performance by Germany ended their journey, sending the Lakers star home. The knockout stage matches are taking place in Riga, the capital of Latvia, having commenced on Saturday with the Round of 16.

Tournament Format

The tournament initially began with a group stage, featuring four groups, each composed of six teams. This group stage, which concluded on September 4, utilized a round-robin format where each team played every other team in its respective group once. The top four teams from each group advanced to the knockout phase.
