The EuroBasket 2025 men`s basketball championship began on Wednesday, featuring 24 teams and numerous NBA stars vying for the European title. Matches are being held across four host nations: Cyprus, Finland, Poland, and Latvia. The knockout rounds, including the semi-finals, third-place playoff, and the championship game, will take place in Riga, Latvia, in September. Defending champions Spain will aim to retain their title, which they secured in 2022 by defeating France.
EuroBasket 2025 is packed with star power, promising an exciting tournament. Luka Dončić is representing his home country Slovenia, while three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić leads Serbia, considered one of the tournament favorites. Giannis Antetokounmpo will once again play for Greece. Other notable NBA players include Latvia`s Kristaps Porziņģis, Franz Wagner, who helped Germany secure a bronze medal in 2022, and a promising young French trio: Zaccharie Risacher, Alexandre Sarr, and Bilal Coulibaly. However, France`s Victor Wembanyama will not participate in EuroBasket due to his NBA season being cut short by a blood clot in February.
With the tournament now underway, here`s everything you need to know:
Tournament Format
The tournament kicks off with a group stage, featuring four groups, each comprising six teams. The group stage follows a round-robin format, where every team plays each opponent within its group once. Teams earn two points for a win and one point for a loss. At the conclusion of this stage, the top four teams from each group advance to the knockout phase. If two teams are tied on points, their head-to-head record serves as the initial tiebreaker. Should a further tiebreaker be needed, point differential will be used, followed by total points scored.
