The highly anticipated EuroBasket 2025 tournament is set to commence on Wednesday, August 27th, featuring 24 national teams and a stellar lineup of NBA talent all vying for the prestigious title of European men`s basketball champions. The initial group stage matches will be distributed across four host nations: Cyprus, Finland, Poland, and Latvia. The thrilling knockout rounds, culminating in the third-place playoff and the grand championship final, will take place in Riga, Latvia, next month. Spain, the reigning champions from 2022 where they defeated France in the final, will be looking to successfully defend their title.
This edition of EuroBasket promises an abundance of star power. Fans can look forward to seeing Luka Dončić representing Slovenia, three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić leading Serbia, and Giannis Antetokounmpo once again playing for Greece. The roster of NBA talent extends further, including Kristaps Porziņģis for host nation Latvia, Franz Wagner — instrumental in Germany`s 2022 bronze medal victory — and a promising young French team featuring 2024 NBA Draft`s No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher, alongside Alexandre Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly. Notably, Victor Wembanyama of France will not participate due to his NBA season being curtailed by a blood clot in February.
Here`s a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know about the tournament:
Tournament Format
The competition kicks off with a group stage featuring four groups, each comprising six teams. Within each group, a round-robin format ensures every team plays every other team once. A victory earns two points, while a loss grants one point. The top four teams from each group will advance to the subsequent knockout stage. In the event of a points tie between two teams, the head-to-head record will serve as the primary tiebreaker. Should a further tie persist, point differential will be used, followed by total points scored if still required.
