Details of the Sentencing

Former NBA star Shawn Kemp has been sentenced to 30 days of electronic home monitoring following his May arrest for second-degree assault. According to reports from The Seattle Times, this decision allows Kemp to avoid jail time, as Pierce County Superior Court Judge Michael Schwartz determined that the specific circumstances of Kemp`s case warranted a lighter sentence than typically imposed.

The 55-year-old Kemp is also required to fulfill additional penalties, including serving one year of community custody and completing a total of 240 hours of community service.

The Incident and Guilty Plea

Kemp pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in May following an incident where he allegedly fired a gun at two men inside a Toyota 4Runner outside the Tacoma Mall in Tacoma, Washington. Kemp maintained that the shooting was an act of self-defense, asserting that he returned fire only after the occupants of the 4Runner had shot at him first.

“I`m very apologetic for what I did,” Kemp told the judge before the conclusion of his sentencing hearing, as reported by The Seattle Times.

Kemp`s Illustrious NBA Career

Throughout his prominent professional career, Shawn Kemp was a highly regarded player, earning the distinction of a six-time NBA All-Star. He notably played for the Seattle SuperSonics from 1993 to 1997 and the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1997 to 2000. Furthermore, he received three consecutive All-NBA Second Team selections between 1994 and 1996. Kemp concluded his playing career with stints at the Portland Trail Blazers (2000-02) and the Orlando Magic (2002-03).
