Diabetes type 2: The best exercise to protect against high blood sugar – are you at risk?

Diabetes is a common condition that affects more than four million people in the UK, and 90 percent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. You could lower your risk of high blood sugar by regularly doing rowing, it’s been claimed.

Type 2 diabetes could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.

Without enough of the hormone, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into usable energy.

It’s crucial that if you think you may have diabetes, you speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

But one of the easiest ways to avoid high blood sugar is to regularly go rowing.

Rowing is a type of aerobic exercise that is an ideal activity for diabetes patients, according to medical website Diabetes.co.uk.

Aerobic exercises help to strengthen the cardiovascular system while also boosting the immune system.

All diabetes patients should aim to do a moderate level of exercise, which raises the heart rate.

Rowing, cycling and power walking are all types of aerobic activity.

“People with diabetes are encouraged to exercise regularly for better blood sugar control and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases,” it said.

“The reason for this is that muscles which are working use more glucose than those that are resting.

“Muscle movement leads to greater sugar uptake by muscle cells and lower blood sugar levels.

“There are some exercise precautions which people with diabetes must take, however, when done safely, exercise is a valuable aid to optimal health.”

Meanwhile, you could also lower your risk of high blood sugar by making a few diet swaps.

Combine your exercise regime with certain foods to make sure you have a balanced blood sugar level.

Greek yoghurt, for example, is a complex superfood that may help to improve insulin resistance.

Full-fat yoghurt is the better option for diabetes patients, compared to low-fat varieties, nutritionists have revealed.

Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the signs and symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.

Common diabetes symptoms include having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal, having an unquenchable thirst, and passing more urine than normal.

You should speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the warning signs or symptoms of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.

Diagnosing the condition early is very important, because patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart disease and strokes.
