Folate is a type of B-vitamin that prevents the build-up of a harmful amino acid, known as homocysteine.
People with the highest levels of homocysteine are more at risk of developing some deadly conditions, including heart disease and strokes.
Asparagus is also rich in dietary fibre, which has been linked to a lower risk of high blood pressure and coronary heart disease.

“There are many things you can do to help keep your heart healthy and disease-free,” said medical website Medical News Today.
“When taking steps to minimise the risk of heart disease, diet is a good place to start.
“Asparagus is a natural source of folate, which helps to prevent an amino acid called homocysteine from building up in the body.
“High homocysteine levels have been linked with an increased risk of heart-related conditions, such as coronary artery disease and stroke.”

Meanwhile, you could be raising your risk of a deadly heart attack by regularly eating coconut oil, scientists have claimed.
Eating coconut oil results in “significantly” higher levels of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol, compared with nontropical vegetable oils, according to researchers from the National University of Singapore.
They suggested that coconut oil is particularly high in saturated fat, which may subsequently raise cholesterol levels.
Higher levels of LDL cholesterol increases the risk of high blood pressure, as well as heart attacks.
