Under immense pressure, left-handed batsman Tilak Varma delivered a masterful unbeaten 69, steering India to a five-wicket victory against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup final. This triumphant performance at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday secured India`s ninth Asia Cup title. The match witnessed a dramatic shift after Kuldeep Yadav spearheaded India`s comeback, claiming four crucial wickets, including three in a pivotal 17th over. Pakistan suffered a stunning collapse, plummeting from a strong position of 113/1 to being all out for 146 in 19.1 overs, losing their last nine wickets for a mere 33 runs. The astute spin trio of Kuldeep, Axar Patel, and Varun Chakravarthy collectively wreaked havoc, securing eight wickets, as Pakistan`s batsmen succumbed to ill-advised aerial shots. Kuldeep, despite an initial expensive spell of 23 runs in his first two overs, redeemed himself by snatching four wickets for only seven runs in his subsequent two, receiving robust support from Axar, Chakravarthy, and Jasprit Bumrah, who each contributed two wickets.
Entering the crease with India struggling at 20/3, Tilak Varma displayed remarkable composure and precision. His memorable innings of 69 not out, adorned with three fours and four sixes, became the bedrock of India`s chase. While his teammates faltered, Varma remained steadfast, anchoring the innings and showcasing exceptional timing and temperament under duress.
Forming crucial partnerships of 57 runs with Sanju Samson (24) and 60 runs with Shivam Dube (33), Varma expertly guided India across the finish line with two balls remaining. This victory capped off a tournament brimming with drama and intensity, as India lifted the trophy as the only undefeated team – remarkably, on the exact same date they had previously won the title in 2018.
The Chase Begins
Previous encounters with Pakistan often saw India`s openers lay a strong foundation for the chase. However, in this final, India`s pursuit began precariously. Faheem Ashraf`s wide slower ball led to Abhishek Sharma miscuing a shot to mid-on, while captain Suryakumar Yadav mistimed a drive off Shaheen Shah Afridi`s slower delivery, resulting in a catch by a diving mid-off fielder.
A moment of early panic arose when Shubman Gill and Tilak Varma hesitated during a quick single to mid-on, with a direct hit narrowly missing a run-out. Soon after, Gill attempted consecutive boundaries, advancing down the pitch for a flat-batted shot, but mistimed his pull, which was caught by a leaping mid-on fielder off Ashraf`s bowling.
Sanju Samson initiated the rebuilding effort with an elegant cover drive for four off Shaheen Shah Afridi. Varma then followed up by dispatching Ashraf for a four and a six. The pair continued to accumulate runs, hitting a boundary each off Mohammad Nawaz and Haris Rauf. However, Samson received a reprieve when he was dropped on 12 by Hussain Talat at deep mid-wicket.
Varma`s well-calculated risk to alleviate pressure proved successful as he executed a powerful slog-sweep off Abrar Ahmed for a six. Samson then joined in, muscling Ayub over long-on for another maximum. However, Pakistan responded quickly when Samson, attempting a lofted shot off a wide delivery from Ahmed, sliced it directly to backward point, ending his innings.
As the required run rate escalated to ten, pressure mounted significantly. A mix-up nearly saw Varma run out on 37, saved only by the timely grounding of his bat`s shoulder. India found another moment of respite when Dube welcomed Rauf with a boundary, followed by Varma showcasing his straight drive and pull shot to collect a four and a six, culminating in 17 crucial runs from the 15th over.
Shivam Dube`s powerful hitting came to the fore as he smashed Ahmed for a six, while Tilak Varma reached his half-century off 41 deliveries. Dube then ended a 16-ball boundary drought by hitting a full toss from Rauf over the mid-wicket boundary for another six, before stepping across his stumps to pull Ashraf for a four.
Despite Dube holing out to long-off against Ashraf, Varma continued his assault, striking Rauf for a six. The chase was then magnificently concluded by Rinku Singh, who sealed the victory with a boundary over mid-on, igniting jubilant celebrations within the Indian squad.
Pakistan`s Innings Collapse
Earlier in the match, despite Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube finding some swing, Pakistan`s innings began aggressively. Openers Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman struck three boundaries within the first three overs. Farhan specifically targeted Bumrah, hitting him for a four and a six. However, the controlled bowling of Chakravarthy and Patel helped contain the scoring, with Pakistan finishing the powerplay at a solid 45/0.
Farhan maintained his attacking momentum, rocking back to pull Kuldeep for a six, then slogging Axar for a four, reaching his fifty off just 35 balls. After lofting Chakravarthy over long-on for another maximum, the spinner quickly retaliated, causing Farhan to hole out to deep mid-wicket for 57, thereby breaking an impressive 84-run opening partnership.
Saim Ayub quickly added two boundaries off Dube before miscuing a shot to backward point off Kuldeep. From this point, Pakistan`s innings began a dramatic and rapid decline. Mohammad Haris chipped a simple catch straight to mid-off against Axar, while Fakhar Zaman attempted an overambitious shot and was caught at backward point off Chakravarthy.
Sanju Samson displayed sharp wicketkeeping, securing catches to dismiss Hussain Talat off Axar and Salman Ali Agha off Kuldeep. Kuldeep Yadav further intensified Pakistan`s collapse by trapping Shaheen Shah Afridi leg before wicket and then claiming Faheem Ashraf, who holed out to long-off.
Jasprit Bumrah returned to the attack, uprooting Haris Rauf`s off stump and then seeing Mohammad Nawaz hole out to deep mid-wicket, effectively concluding Pakistan`s innings for less than 150 runs. Although Pakistan`s bowlers fought hard to keep them in the game, their efforts were ultimately insufficient to prevent Tilak Varma from guiding India to victory in a high-stakes final.
