Islam Makhachev Draws Surprising Support From Dan Hooker Ahead of UFC 322

In a surprising turn of events, top lightweight contender Dan Hooker has publicly voiced his support for his former opponent, Islam Makhachev. Makhachev, the former record-breaking lightweight champion, recently vacated his title to embark on an ambitious quest: challenging welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena in the main event of UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden.

Many observers expected Hooker to rally behind his fellow Oceanic fighter, Della Maddalena, especially given his past rivalry with Makhachev. However, Hooker has instead offered an impassioned endorsement of Makhachev`s audacious move.

Hooker Praises Makhachev`s Courageous Step Up

The history between Hooker and Makhachev dates back to October 2021, when Makhachev secured a first-round submission victory over Hooker at the Etihad Arena. Despite the competitive past, a mutual respect has evidently blossomed between the two fighters.

Speaking on Sky Sports New Zealand, where he serves as a UFC pundit, Hooker lauded Makhachev`s decision to ascend to welterweight. “It’s a huge ask for Islam,” Hooker stated. “Credit to him for stepping up to the plate and coming up to welterweight. Definitely got my respect for being able to move up a weight class and fight Jack Della.” He further emphasized the significance of Makhachev`s endeavor, noting, “It’s something that even the greatest lightweight of all time, Khabib, never managed to chase that accomplishment of being a two-division champion. So credit to him but it is a huge ask.” Despite his admiration for Makhachev`s courage, Hooker ultimately predicted a win for Jack Della Maddalena.
