Jaylen Brown Welcomes Bill Nye to Celtics Media Day for a Science-Meets-Sports Collaboration

NBA News

Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown has recently strengthened his unique friendship with the renowned educator, Bill Nye, famously known as “The Science Guy.” This bond reached a new milestone when Brown extended an invitation to Nye to join the Celtics for their media day at the team`s cutting-edge practice facility.

“I feel like it`s Celtic history being able to have Bill Nye in the Auerbach Center practice facility, so that`s pretty cool,” Brown remarked, according to MassLive. He further elaborated, “We`re gonna do some science experiments downstairs and I always say in the inner child in me, but just me right now is excited. It`s an honor and a privilege to be able to be here and talk about things outside of just sports and how it also correlates. You have sports, but how sports correlates to science and education and learning and how if we merge these worlds that you can have a real impact on the next generation.”

During his visit, the 69-year-old Nye collaborated with Brown at the Auerbach Center, even conducting live science experiments that were streamed on Twitch. This event closely followed Brown`s trip to Los Angeles just the previous week, where he spoke in honor of Nye as “The Science Guy” received his star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Nye, visibly touched by Brown`s gesture, shared his gratitude: “The guy flew out to LA just to say a few words… He`s got a life to live. He`s very wealthy. He doesn`t need to do that. But he was very gracious. Of course, he`s charming. Everybody was delighted to see him… I get choked up. He flew across the country to just say a few words at this Walk of Fame thing. It was really remarkable.”

For several decades, Bill Nye has stood as an iconic figure, shaping the scientific understanding of countless students through his popular television program, “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” Broadcast from 1993 to 1997, the show became an educational cornerstone in classrooms nationwide, effectively demystifying complex scientific concepts and making them accessible and engaging for young minds.

Brown himself was among the numerous students who grew up watching Nye`s impactful educational content in the Atlanta suburbs during the 2010s. Their connection initially sparked last season after a coincidental meeting at a Washington Wizards versus Celtics game, which subsequently flourished into their current friendship.

Looking ahead, Jaylen Brown is gearing up for his tenth season as a Boston Celtic. The accomplished guard is expected to shoulder an even more substantial scoring responsibility in the upcoming 2025-26 season. This increased role is particularly crucial as teammate Jayson Tatum is anticipated to be sidelined, recovering from a torn Achilles tendon sustained during the 2025 NBA playoffs.
