Sports News

Jiri Prochazka appears to have a clear sense of his priorities as he prepares for his UFC comeback.

Jiri Prochazka showcased considerable improvement in his most recent octagon appearance. In January, at UFC 311, he delivered a commanding performance against former champion Jamahal Hill, securing a finish via strikes and impressively bouncing back from his TKO loss to then-champion Alex Pereira.

Subsequently, Prochazka turned down a significant title opportunity against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 317 to focus on his university exams, ultimately earning his master’s degree in security and strategic studies.

What motivated Prochazka, the UFC`s #2-ranked light heavyweight contender, to dedicate himself so diligently to achieving a master`s degree?

Jiri Prochazka: `The Master`s Degree Itself Doesn`t Matter to Me`

Prochazka is dedicated to finding every possible advantage in his career as a UFC fighter.

Known for his unorthodox style, Prochazka is among the most unique fighters on the roster, and the former champion frequently captures attention with his unconventional training approaches.

This week, Prochazka disclosed that his pursuit of a master’s degree was aimed at becoming a more intelligent fighter inside the cage. Speaking at the UFC 320 media day, he stated, “In one month, I completely transformed my life,” referring to his academic achievement. He elaborated, “For everyone, it doesn`t matter what you`re studying—whether it`s college, university, or high school, just pursue it. For fighters, it`s significantly more beneficial because we must engage our minds, first with punches, and then with strategy and tactics during the fight.”

“I genuinely don`t care about the master`s degree itself,” Prochazka confessed. “It`s not about the diploma. It`s entirely about applying myself [in the UFC], working strategically, utilizing my memory, and engaging all these mental faculties. That`s the true essence of it,” Prochazka concluded.

Jiri Prochazka`s Impressive Record: Only One Opponent Has Defeated Him Since 2015

Khalil Rountree Jr. faces a formidable challenge at UFC 320.

Prochazka has solidified his position as one of the world`s elite light heavyweights, boasting a 15-2 record since his 2015 defeat to former Strikeforce Champion Muhammed Lawal (a loss he later avenged).

Prochazka maintained a 13-fight winning streak until he encountered his initial UFC loss to former champion Alex Pereira at UFC 295 in 2023. Months later, following their respective victories at UFC 300, Pereira and Prochazka had a rematch, with Pereira once again prevailing via a flawless second-round TKO at UFC 303.

Apart from these instances, Prochazka has consistently finished every other opponent the UFC has presented him with.
