Philadelphia 76ers` star center, Joel Embiid, a player often challenged by injuries throughout his career, is currently in a recovery phase. During the team`s media day on Friday, the 31-year-old provided an encouraging update, stating he `feels pretty good` and confirming a `plan in place` designed to ensure his consistent presence on the court, especially after playing a career-low 19 games last season.
Embiid, who underwent knee surgery in April, refrained from specifying an exact return date, only noting that his rehabilitation is `on schedule.` Nevertheless, his comments offered a promising outlook for his future availability to the eager Sixers fanbase.
A seven-time All-Star, Embiid articulated his primary objective: `The goal is to play consistently and not be in the position we were last year.` He added, `Everybody that knows me knows I want to play. I want to play every single game. I`ve been pretty unlucky when it comes to that compared to most NBA players,` highlighting his strong desire to remain on the court despite his history with injuries.
Despite his clear ambition to play, Embiid emphasized that he would not rush his return or push himself if he wasn`t feeling fully fit.
Embiid stated, `I want to be as honest as possible. I think going forward we`re just going to listen to the body.` He conceded that recovery might be `unpredictable at times,` but expressed acceptance of this, embracing a day-by-day approach. `We`re on the right path. If there`s something that happens, it`s OK. Focus on fixing it and keep going. That`s my mentality,` he affirmed, showcasing a pragmatic outlook.
After participating in only 58 regular-season games over the past two seasons, Embiid admitted to feeling mentally much stronger now than he did a year prior.
Reflecting on his frequent injuries, Embiid shared his enduring philosophy: `The one thing I`ve always told myself is you can`t give up. No matter what comes, you got to get back up and keep pushing through.` He concluded with optimism, `I`m excited to keep progressing.`
Paul George Provides Update on His Return to the 76ers
The 76ers are managing several key player injuries, including Paul George, who underwent a procedure on his left knee this summer. George indicated he does not anticipate joining training camp activities. Currently, he reports no swelling and is capable of `pretty much everything but full contact,` suggesting significant progress in his recovery.
George acknowledged the critical nature of the upcoming weeks, stating, `The next couple of weeks is very important, leading into the season, start of the season, all of that stuff.` He committed to a daily focus on his recovery, expressing confidence that he`ll be `at a good place earlier than later.` He also highlighted a marked improvement in his physical condition compared to the previous season: `I do feel better, I do feel good, a lot better than I did last year, which is saying a lot. I was dealing with a lot last year, trying to play through a lot of stuff, which I just couldn`t get over the hump.`
The previous season was challenging for Philadelphia, as they concluded with a 24-58 record, placing 13th in the Eastern Conference, a period during which the 35-year-old George struggled with various injuries.
George candidly described the past season as `rock bottom,` asserting, `Can`t get no worse than last year.`
The nine-time All-Star, George, also revealed his newfound willingness to transition to the power forward position, a role he had previously been reluctant to embrace.
Reflecting on his evolving perspective, George stated, `If you asked me about this 10 years ago, I wouldn`t have been a fan of it.` He justified his shift by noting the modern game`s lack of traditional power forwards and his current career stage. `At this point in my career, let the young guys go out and play the wing positions. I know where I`m at in my career, I can adjust and play at the four spot, give extra ballhandling on the floor, better spacing. I`m very comfortable playing at the four spot this year,` he explained, emphasizing his adaptability and the strategic benefits of this change.
The 76ers are scheduled to conduct practice in New Jersey this weekend before traveling to the United Arab Emirates for a pair of preseason contests in Abu Dhabi.
