Kevin Durant Plans Long-Term Future with Houston Rockets

NBA News

This summer, the Houston Rockets made one of the most significant moves of the NBA offseason, acquiring Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns in June in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and a first-round pick. This trade, following their second-place finish in the Western Conference last season, signaled the Rockets` readiness to go all-in on pursuing a championship in their current competitive window. However, this window with Durant is currently quite short, as his contract expires after this season.

There has been speculation regarding whether the Rockets would offer Durant a full maximum contract extension. On Monday, in his first media appearance as a Rocket, Durant was asked about his potential contract extension in Houston before free agency. “I do see myself signing a contract extension. I can`t tell you exactly when that will happen, but I do see it happening,” Durant stated.

Rockets GM Rafael Stone declined to comment on the extension talks, but Durant`s response suggests that discussions are indeed underway, and he remains optimistic about reaching an agreement.

The Rockets were among a select few teams Durant had listed as preferred trade destinations – notably excluding Golden State and Minnesota. He elaborated on his reasons for wanting to be in Houston: “I`ve just seen the quick progression of this franchise from where it was right after the James Harden-Chris Paul era,” Durant explained. “Seeing when Ime [Udoka] got here and how he turned it around so fast. I have some connections here within the organization, people I work with around the league already. So it just felt organic and natural coming into the gym, being a Houston Rocket for the first time.”

Udoka was part of the Brooklyn Nets` coaching staff during Durant`s early tenure there, and that relationship appears to have played a significant role in the veteran`s desire to join this next phase of the Rockets` rapid rebuild. The team has made substantial strides over the past two seasons, and Durant`s addition is viewed as the potential final step toward becoming true title contenders. Ideally, this partnership would extend beyond just the current season, and Durant seems confident that both sides will reach a mutually agreeable extension, prolonging their championship window for years to come.
