MI Emirates secured their berth in Qualifier 1 of the ILT20 and confirmed a top-two finish following a comprehensive eight-wicket victory against the Dubai Capitals in Abu Dhabi. The win marked their fifth consecutive triumph of the season.
The foundation for the victory was laid by the superb spin attack, followed by an explosive batting display from captain Kieron Pollard. Spinners were central to restricting the Capitals, who managed only 122/8.
Key bowling contributors included Allah Ghazanfar, who grabbed an excellent haul of 3/28, and Shakib Al Hasan, who delivered a highly miserly spell of 1/11 across his four overs.
The Controlled Chase
Chasing a modest target, MI Emirates were guided home by Pollard, who remained unbeaten on 44 from 31 deliveries, featuring five maximums and one four. The openers, Muhammad Waseem (27) and Andre Fletcher (21 off 30), provided a rapid start, building a 33-run partnership in the first three overs. They reached the halfway point comfortably positioned at 59/2.
The chase was then anchored through the middle overs by the skipper alongside Tom Banton. Pollard dramatically shifted the momentum in the 14th over, devastating Waqar Salamkheil for 30 runs, which brought the required equation down to just 10 runs needed from the final five overs. The match concluded swiftly thanks to an unbroken 67-run partnership off 43 balls between Pollard and Banton.
Capitals Collapse
Earlier, after electing to field, MI Emirates applied sustained pressure immediately. Shakib initiated the collapse by dismissing Shayan Jahangir in the fourth over. Ghazanfar quickly followed, accounting for Sediqullah Atal, leaving the Dubai Capitals struggling at 35/2.
The situation worsened rapidly. Leus de Plooy (3) was run out, and Dan Mousley claimed the wicket of Rovman Powell (8). Arab Gul further tightened the grip by trapping number-three batter Jordan Cox leg before wicket, resulting in the Capitals being effectively out of the contest at 53/5.
MI Emirates are now set to face the Dessert Viper in Qualifier 1 on December 30.
