KL Rahul has achieved a significant milestone in Test cricket, joining an exclusive cohort of Indian batsmen, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, by completing 2000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC). The accomplished batter reached this landmark on Day 1 of the second Test against West Indies. He is now the seventh Indian player to amass 2000 runs in WTC matches, a list currently led by wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant with 2731 runs, followed by Rohit, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the other Indians to have reached this impressive feat. Globally, England`s Joe Root tops the WTC scoring charts with 6080 runs, ahead of Australia`s Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne.
Rahul displayed excellent form early in his innings, but his promising start was cut short by an unusual delivery from left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican. India had made a cautious start to the day, reaching 94 for 1 by lunch.
At the interval, Yashasvi Jaiswal was batting confidently on 40, alongside Sai Sudharsan, who had scored 16 runs. Sudharsan impressed with three elegant boundaries, including a stylish on-drive and a precise square cut.
Batting on 38, Rahul, who had previously struck spinner Khary Pierre for a six over deep mid-wicket, misjudged the length of Warrican`s delivery. Warrican, anticipating Rahul`s advance down the pitch, pulled his length back slightly. By the time Rahul reacted, he attempted to dab the ball, only for it to turn and jump past his outside edge, leading to a stumping by wicket-keeper Tevin Imlach.
Considering the seemingly favorable batting conditions, Rahul might understandably feel he missed an opportunity for a century. His backfoot punch through covers off Jayden Seals was a highlight of exquisite timing. Before his dismissal, he had contributed five fours and a maximum.
The opening partnership showed careful discipline during the initial hour, accumulating 58 runs. Jaiswal, who had a brief stay at the crease in India`s sole innings in Ahmedabad, demonstrated solid defense and an assured understanding of his off-stump. A perfectly timed steer between gully and point showcased his class, while his straight drive off Anderson Phillips was exceptional.
Jaiswal`s innings was not characterized by aggressive strokeplay initially; rather, he focused on settling in. He patiently left deliveries outside the off-stump and avoided expansive drives. However, once he found his rhythm, he began to attack the spinners, with a powerful sweep off Roston Chase`s bowling standing out as particularly memorable.
