Lakers Executives Visit Luka Dončić Before EuroBasket Opener

Sports News

Los Angeles Lakers executives Rob Pelinka (General Manager) and Jeanie Buss (Owner) traveled to Poland to express their support for star guard Luka Dončić as he prepares to represent Slovenia in the upcoming EuroBasket tournament. The high-ranking Lakers officials attended Dončić`s practice on Wednesday, just ahead of Slovenia`s inaugural group stage match in the quadrennial European championship.

This visit is a clear demonstration of solidarity with Dončić, who is increasingly viewed as the foundational player for the Lakers` future, particularly as LeBron James approaches the concluding phase of his distinguished career in Los Angeles. It signals that Dončić is primed to assume the mantle of one of the sport`s biggest superstars once James` tenure with the team concludes.

The Lakers further solidified their long-term commitment to Dončić earlier this month by signing him to a significant contract extension. This deal guarantees his presence with the team through at least 2027, with a player option that could extend it into 2028. This substantial three-year, $165 million agreement was finalized a mere six months after his initial arrival with the Lakers.

The attendance of Pelinka and Buss at EuroBasket also unequivocally signals the Lakers` full endorsement of Dončić`s participation in the tournament. This backing is particularly notable given a recent injury scare he experienced during exhibition play. The 26-year-old was seen limping off the court during an August 16 game against Great Britain, later diagnosed as a knee contusion caused by a teammate`s accidental fall. Fortunately, the incident proved to be less severe than it initially appeared.

In stark contrast, Dončić`s former team, the Dallas Mavericks, did not exhibit the same level of support. Last season, Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison controversially traded Dončić to the Lakers in a move widely considered one of the most puzzling transactions in NBA history. Harrison cited concerns regarding Dončić`s health and conditioning when pressed on the decision, which was met with widespread disapproval from Mavericks fans.

This trade, however, proved exceptionally beneficial for the Lakers. Following Dončić`s surprising acquisition, the team went on to secure the Pacific Division title and clinch the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. Dončić maintained his elite performance with his new squad, recording nearly identical statistics to his time with the Mavericks in the first half of the season (averaging 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists in L.A., compared to 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in Dallas). Despite the Lakers` first-round playoff exit, the five-time All-Star delivered a truly terrific performance.

Dončić is just one of many prominent NBA stars set to showcase their talents in EuroBasket. The tournament will feature other top professionals vying for international glory, including Nikola Jokić representing Serbia, Giannis Antetokounmpo for Greece, and Kristaps Porziņģis leading the Latvian roster, among numerous other celebrated players.
