Growing up, John Elway was my idol and my first true sports hero. As a teenager in 49ers and Raiders territory, before the era of NFL Ticket, I would drive an hour every Sunday to my grandparents` secluded house, which had satellite TV, just to watch Broncos games. It was a huge part of my formative years; I swear a piece of me died with every Super Bowl loss.
When the team finally clinched the championship in 1997, I was absolutely euphoric – and I don`t use that word lightly. I felt like I was on top of the world. Elway`s iconic helicopter dive for a first down on the game-winning drive, his triumphant fist pump to the sideline – I still watch that highlight almost weekly. To this day, I feel a profound connection to Elway, the kind a fan can genuinely claim for someone they`ve never met.
I distinctly recall Elway appearing on a late-night show, announcing he`d made a significant decision. My stomach dropped, only for him to reveal he had merely decided to switch golf iron brands. I certainly didn`t find it amusing at the time.
As it happens, LeBron also played the branding card. It was somewhat creative, I suppose. The entire setup was designed to be a near-identical sequel to James` infamous 2010 “Decision” to move his talents to South Beach, an event broadcast live with an almost Watergate-level of suspense.
He went through the entire routine: wore nearly the exact same striped shirt, sat opposite an (still unidentified) reporter in a gymnasium, only to announce he was taking his talents to… Hennessy?
Unsurprisingly, this “reveal” garnered varied reactions. Many LeBron fans felt a sense of relief, while his numerous detractors eagerly mocked it as his latest display of self-indulgence. To the latter group, I say: get off your high horse. If given the opportunity to earn the kind of money LeBron is undoubtedly set to make from this partnership, simply for a lighthearted commercial shoot, anyone would jump at the chance. We all would. So, spare us the sanctimony.
Nevertheless, there are some genuine potential casualties in this scenario. When LeBron hinted at this “Second Decision” on Monday, fueling speculation that he might be announcing his farewell season, ticket prices for the Lakers` final home game of the upcoming season – an April 12 matchup against the Utah Jazz – skyrocketed. One can assume many eager fans felt compelled to secure those costly seats.
It`s crucial to remember that not all hope is lost for these ticket purchasers. LeBron could still very well announce that this is indeed his final season at a later date. For instance, in 2015, Kobe Bryant waited until almost December to reveal his retirement plans, initiating a farewell tour that culminated in an epic 60-point performance in his final game against… the Utah Jazz.
Just food for thought.
In any case, in retrospect, it seems improbable that LeBron, a meticulously calculating self-promoter, would obscure the celebration of his genuine retirement announcement with a kitschy callback to one of the most infamously cheesy moments in sports history. It was actually quite astute and self-aware of LeBron to reintroduce his 2010 “Decision” into the discourse with a humorous twist. That whole episode has become a running joke, so he might as well embrace it and project the image of someone willing to laugh at his own past.
Personally, I don`t invest much emotional energy into the timing or method of LeBron`s retirement announcement, beyond recognizing it will provide ample content for the basketball world. I`ve never felt a personal connection to LeBron in that sense, despite firmly believing he is the greatest basketball player of all time. I`m a Steph Curry supporter. When Curry eventually considers retirement, I`ll certainly be intrigued by any social media teases he might offer, though I doubt he`d approach it in the same manner.
However, LeBron has a consistent history of seeking to remain in the spotlight, and this “I might retire” card is one he can, and likely will, continue to play. But eventually – perhaps tomorrow, or next week – he will have to make that definitive announcement. And when that day arrives, it will be no laughing matter for many of his dedicated followers.
