LeBron James Sidelined for Training Camp, Lakers Prioritize ‘Longer Ramp Up’ Due to Glute Injury

NBA News

LeBron James is set to begin his 23rd NBA season, continuing to perform at an extraordinary level for a player of his age.

At this point in his career, James` primary challenge involves managing his body through the demanding NBA season. As the 40-year-old prepares for another year with the Lakers, he`s already dealing with a persistent glute issue, which caused him to miss the team`s initial training camp practice.

Coach JJ Redick reported that James is sidelined due to `nerve irritation in the glute.` This season, the team plans to adopt a much more cautious approach in the lead-up to the regular season. While Redick couldn`t guarantee James` presence for the season opener, he stated it`s the objective, adding that they hope for some preseason participation, but prioritizing his full strength for the regular season is paramount.

Last season, James concluded the playoffs with a sprained MCL, following several seasons plagued by various foot, ankle, and calf problems. Such challenges are common for athletes so far into their careers. The Lakers intend to devise a strategy that best allows James to endure the season and enter the playoffs as healthy as possible.

Redick explained this strategy involves a `longer ramp up` period for James this season, suggesting James `did too much` in last year`s training camp when Redick took over. This year, the team is committed to `playing the long game` with the 40-year-old veteran, aiming to preserve his freshness and avoid excessive strain during camp, thus maximizing his availability later in the season.
