The news of Luka Dončić`s trade to the Lakers on February 2nd initially struck many as unbelievable. Once confirmed, it quickly became apparent that this was one of the most astonishing trades in NBA history, prompting widespread speculation about the Dallas Mavericks` rationale for parting with Dončić.
Just eight months prior, the Mavericks had advanced to the NBA Finals, largely due to Dončić`s exceptional play. Despite recovering from a calf strain sustained on Christmas Day, he was nearing a return to action before the trade. There had been no prior signs of a deteriorating relationship between Dončić and the Mavericks; in fact, Dončić`s reported reaction—breaking his phone upon hearing the news—suggested he had no intention of departing from Dallas.
In his subsequent press conference, Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison justified the trade by emphasizing that “defense wins championships,” subtly criticizing Dončić`s defensive contributions. Harrison also highlighted that Anthony Davis, acquired in the trade, aligned better with the team`s desired culture. Subsequently, reports surfaced detailing Dallas`s frustration with Dončić`s conditioning, with mentions of his alleged habits of drinking beer and smoking hookah, alongside a perceived lack of dedication to physical fitness throughout both the season and offseason, as key concerns for Harrison.
Following the trade, Dončić`s conditioning became a central point of discussion. As the Lakers unexpectedly exited the playoffs in the first round, some observers echoed Harrison`s view that Dončić needed to improve his physical shape to succeed at the elite level. Conversely, many speculated that the negative publicity surrounding his fitness would motivate the superstar guard, a prediction that now seems to be coming true.
During an interview with Men`s Health, Dončić outlined his summer regimen, which he stated has left him feeling “more rested” than he has in years. His new routine includes a gluten-free, low-sugar diet combined with twice-daily workouts.
Describing his offseason transformation, Dončić remarked, “Visually, I would say my whole body looks better.”
Online discussions suggest Dončić appears noticeably leaner than in previous offseasons. While Mavericks fans are accustomed to him shedding weight before the season, this summer`s transformation seems particularly significant.
After a turbulent season—marked by his lowest scoring average since his rookie year, significant limitations from a persistent calf strain, and the unexpected, life-altering trade from the only team he`d ever known—it seems these challenges have served as a powerful motivator for Dončić.
Dončić commented, “Every summer, I dedicate myself to improving various aspects of my game. My competitive nature is strong. This summer, however, felt distinctly different; it truly fueled my desire to excel even further.”
Persistent criticism regarding one`s physical condition and commitment to fitness eventually necessitates a change. Dončić clearly has embraced this, and the alarming prospect for the rest of the league is that he has already built a Hall of Fame-caliber career without fully prioritizing his physical health until now.
Dončić`s improved physique will be on display when he represents Slovenia at the 2025 EuroBasket, commencing August 27th, though his true progress will be assessed upon the start of the upcoming NBA season.
Dončić expressed, “I believe my team and I made significant strides this year. However, this is merely the beginning; I must continue to push forward relentlessly.”
