UFC Bantamweight Champion Merab Dvalishvili recently delivered an astonishing response when questioned about the most formidable adversary of his professional career.
The Georgian fighter, who clinched the title last year by defeating Sean O’Malley at UFC 306, navigated a path marked by encounters with numerous world-class champions. Since securing the belt, Dvalishvili has successfully defended it twice this year: first in a closely contested decision against Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311, and then with a third-round submission victory over O’Malley at UFC 316. Widely regarded by peers as the greatest bantamweight of all time, Dvalishvili aims to extend his impressive 14-fight winning streak this Saturday when he faces top contender Cory Sandhagen in the co-main event of UFC 320. As his highly anticipated title defense approaches, Dvalishvili reflected on his extensive 24-fight career, revealing that his most significant challenge surprisingly occurred outside the UFC`s famed Octagon.

Merab Dvalishvili Names Raufeon Stots as His Toughest Opponent, Not Umar Nurmagomedov
Paradoxically, Dvalishvili claims his most demanding career encounter also turned out to be his quickest triumph. Despite a grueling two-round start against Umar Nurmagomedov in their championship bout earlier this year, Dvalishvili was quick to dismiss Nurmagomedov as his most challenging adversary, explicitly stating he wasn`t the toughest opponent. Instead, Dvalishvili identified Raufeon Stots as the fighter who presented his greatest challenge.
This surprising revelation points to a 2017 clash on `Dana White’s Looking For A Fight,` where Dvalishvili secured a spectacular knockout against Stots with a spinning backfist in just 15 seconds, a victory that earned him his UFC contract. Remarkably, Stots, who was the primary talent Dana White had come to scout, embarked on a nearly six-year undefeated streak following that loss, ultimately claiming Bellator’s interim bantamweight championship in 2022. Dvalishvili reminisced about the fight, stating it occurred while he was defending his Ring of Combat belt in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He noted Stots`s subsequent success and Dana White`s initial interest in him, concluding that while it was meant to be his most challenging fight, he emerged victorious in the simplest manner.
Marlon Moraes` Near Knockout and Dvalishvili`s Early UFC Losses
Merab Dvalishvili has maintained an impressive undefeated record since his initial two UFC setbacks against Frankie Saenz and Ricky Simon in 2017 and 2018 respectively. While his wins over Marlon Moraes and Umar Nurmagomedov saw him pushed to his limits, with both opponents having significant moments, it was Moraes who came closest to stopping him. In a thrilling, back-and-forth battle in 2021, Moraes almost knocked out Dvalishvili. However, Dvalishvili displayed incredible resilience, outlasting the former WSOF champion and securing a TKO victory near the end of the second round. This memorable fight remains Dvalishvili’s most recent knockout win.
