Merab Dvalishvili: One Win From Cementing Bantamweight GOAT Status

Sports News

Merab Dvalishvili, widely regarded as one of the greatest bantamweight champions in UFC history, stands on the brink of adding another monumental achievement to his already impressive career.

Following his recent unanimous decision victory over perennial contender Cory Sandhagen at UFC 320, Merab Dvalishvili continues his dominant run as the division`s top fighter.

This latest win against Sandhagen further bolsters the Tbilisi native`s impressive streak of victories as champion, which also includes triumphs over Umar Nurmagomedov and Sean O’Malley.

Remarkably, just one more victory would allow the Georgian fighter to surpass a significant record currently held by one of his closest friends and training partners.

Merab Dvalishvili Ties Aljamain Sterling for Most Bantamweight Title Defenses

Before his bantamweight reign ended with a loss to Sean O’Malley, now-featherweight standout Aljamain Sterling previously set the record for the most consecutive successful title defenses in the bantamweight division.

Sterling originally captured the title from Petr Yan via disqualification, then defeated him in a rematch. He solidified his record by overcoming former champions T.J. Dillashaw and the returning Henry Cejudo.

With his triumphs over Nurmagomedov, O’Malley, and Sandhagen already secured, a fourth successful title defense would cement Dvalishvili`s legacy as the most prolific defending champion in the organization`s bantamweight history.

Considering the inherently challenging nature of defending the bantamweight title, Dvalishvili`s achievements to date are exceptionally impressive.

Who`s Next for Merab Dvalishvili?

With Dvalishvili reportedly eyeing a spot on the year-end UFC 323 card in December, several top contenders are vying for a shot at the active champion.

Umar Nurmagomedov, a former opponent, is frequently mentioned for a rematch with the Georgian star, despite their closely contested first encounter earlier this year.

However, Nurmagomedov must first overcome the surging Mario Bautista in a crucial bout at UFC 321 later this month in Abu Dhabi.

Despite his loss to Dvalishvili earlier this year, Nurmagomedov has not competed since but maintains his position as the number two ranked bantamweight.

Additionally, a rematch against former champion Petr Yan, whom Dvalishvili decisively defeated just two years ago, also presents a compelling option.
