Mohammed Usman Pulled From UFC Rio Due to Failed Drug Test, Opponent Valter Walker Reacts

Sports News

New details have emerged regarding a cancelled bout at UFC Rio. While one fight proceeded despite a significant weight miss, another scheduled contest was abruptly cancelled during fight week, raising questions among fans and fighters.

Among the anticipated matchups for the October 11 event was a heavyweight clash between Mohammed Usman, brother of former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, and Valter Walker, brother of Johnny Walker. Following its last-minute removal from the fight card, the reason for the cancellation has now been revealed.

Brazilian journalist Laerte Viana initially reported Mohammed Usman`s withdrawal without specifying a reason. This event was particularly crucial for Usman, who had recently ended a two-fight losing streak, seemingly securing his position in the UFC. However, the cancellation might be the least of Kamaru Usman`s younger brother`s worries.

Viana later updated his report, stating that Usman`s removal was due to a failed drug test, revealing “elevated testosterone levels.” According to Viana, the test showing high testosterone was conducted in September, suggesting a pre-fight infraction.

Valter Walker Accuses Mohammed Usman of Avoiding the Fight

Valter Walker, aiming for his fourth consecutive professional win, was set to make a significant return to the Octagon in Rio. Despite the cancellation of his bout, Johnny Walker`s brother still proceeded to weigh in, demonstrating his readiness to compete.

During the weigh-ins, Walker expressed his palpable frustration, publicly stating, “I trained a lot for this fight, and this guy ran.” He had initially hoped that the UFC would be able to find him a replacement opponent to salvage his fight week, but it appears unlikely at such short notice, leaving him without an opponent for the event.
