NBA Player Marcus Morris Sr. Arrested in Florida on Fraud Charge

Sports News

Former NBA player Marcus Morris Sr. was arrested at a South Florida airport on Sunday, according to jail records. He faces a fraud charge related to a check issued with insufficient funds. Morris`s agent claims the incident is connected to a casino debt. Morris is currently held at Broward County Main Jail, awaiting extradition.

Agent and Brother Dispute Claims

Morris`s agent, Yoni Noy, sharply criticized the arrest on social media, calling it “absolute insanity” and asserting that “there is absolutely no fraud here.” Noy clarified that an arrest warrant was apparently issued for an outstanding casino marker exceeding $1,200.

Marcus`s twin brother, Markieff Morris, also spoke out on Sunday evening to shed light on the situation. He expressed dissatisfaction with the “crazy wording” of the charge and the public nature of the incident at the airport in front of family. Markieff stated that “they could have come to the house” and promised that the full story would emerge later, labeling the situation a “lesson learned” and “weird shit” that caused him a headache.

This is not Marcus Morris`s first encounter with law enforcement. In 2012, he faced battery charges for assaulting a bar employee in Kansas. Both he and his brother were later acquitted in an aggravated assault case in 2015.

NBA Career Overview

Morris is a free agent who last played in the NBA during the 2023-24 season. After signing with the New York Knicks before the previous campaign, the team waived him in late September, and he has not joined a roster since. Over his career spanning more than a decade, Morris has played for teams such as the Rockets, Suns, Pistons, Celtics, Knicks, Clippers, 76ers, and Cavaliers.

The Houston Rockets drafted Morris in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft. However, he truly established himself as a regular starter during his tenure with the Detroit Pistons. In the 2015-16 season, he started 80 games for Detroit, achieving then-career highs in almost every statistical category. Morris reached his scoring peak during the 2019-20 season with the Knicks, where he averaged 19.6 points per game across 43 starts.

College Stardom

In college, Morris and his brother were standout players at the University of Kansas. Marcus showed more impressive achievements, earning Big 12 Player of the Year honors and consensus second-team All-American selection in 2011. In recognition of his stellar three-year career, Kansas retired his No. 22 jersey.
