Olympic Silver Medalist Mark Madsen’s Explosive UFC Debut and Ambitions

An accomplished three-time Olympic wrestler demonstrated his striking prowess in a remarkably quick UFC debut.

While numerous athletes have transitioned from the Olympics to the UFC, only a select few have achieved both Olympic medals and UFC championships. Kayla Harrison joined this elite group in June after submitting Julianna Pena, following in the footsteps of Henry Cejudo and Ronda Rousey.

Mark Madsen, a Danish combat sports trailblazer and 2016 Rio Olympic silver medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling, was one of the recent notable figures who aimed for but did not secure a UFC title.

Opting to forgo a potential fourth Olympic appearance in 2020, Madsen made the switch to mixed martial arts in 2018. He subsequently signed with the UFC, and his inaugural fight in his home country unfolded with exceptional success.

Madsen`s Dominant UFC Debut Three Years After Olympic Silver

Madsen`s initial appearance in the Octagon took place on September 28, 2019, during a UFC event held at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark, which was headlined by Jared Cannonier`s knockout victory against Jack Hermansson.

For the Danish spectators, the co-main event, featuring their nation`s first Olympic medalist wrestler since 1948 making his debut in the premier MMA promotion, was undoubtedly the main draw.

Madsen secured victory in his UFC debut in just 72 seconds. He immediately demonstrated his wrestling expertise by taking Danilo Belluardo to the ground, then proceeded to unleash powerful strikes, leading to a rapid TKO finish against his Italian adversary.

This performance was remarkably impressive for a fighter with limited prior MMA experience. Madsen subsequently earned victories against established names within the Octagon, including veteran Clay Guida and Vinc Pichel.

Madsen`s Confidence Against Paddy Pimblett Prior to His 2024 Retirement

Following his dominant victory over Belluardo, Madsen extended his unbeaten professional record to 12-0 with three more consecutive wins. During this period, he turned his attention towards one of the UFC`s rising stars.

The Olympic veteran expressed a desire to face another undefeated fighter in the Octagon, Mark Madsen confidently declared his belief that he would defeat Paddy Pimblett.

Madsen stated to Vegas Insider, “I am confident I can defeat Paddy `The Baddy` on any given day. I would out-wrestle him, out-grapple him, and given his tendency to keep his chin exposed, there`s a strong possibility of a knockout victory.”

He added, “I respect Paddy, but I genuinely believe I have the ability to beat him. With Paddy currently holding a 3-0 UFC record and myself at 4-0, I felt it would have been an excellent matchup, pitting `The Baddy` against a true Olympian to see how he fares.”

However, this anticipated fight never materialized, as Madsen announced his retirement from MMA in 2024. In contrast, Pimblett, the fighter from Liverpool, has maintained his undefeated status in the UFC and is now setting his sights on Ilia Topuria`s lightweight championship.
