A recent cricket clash between India and Pakistan in the Women`s World Cup 2025 was overshadowed by a controversial run-out incident involving Pakistan opener Muneeba Ali. The highly anticipated Sunday match witnessed an unusual dismissal that quickly became a major talking point. Muneeba was given out in a peculiar fashion after she had wandered out of her batting crease, and a precise throw from India`s Deepti Sharma struck the stumps. The umpire`s decision to rule her out in favor of the Indian team immediately ignited a significant debate, with the Pakistan captain reportedly raising concerns with match officials.
This contentious moment unfolded on the very last ball of the fourth over. Earlier in the sequence, Muneeba had narrowly survived an LBW appeal off Kranti Gaud. India opted not to review the LBW decision, despite replays subsequently showing that it would have resulted in an out. However, Muneeba`s subsequent decision to step beyond her crease ultimately led to her unfortunate dismissal.
During the post-match press conference, Pakistan fast bowler Diana Baig was directly asked about the incident by a reporter. Baig chose to downplay the controversy, indicating that the matter had already been addressed and resolved internally.
Reporter: Muneeba was run out, and the captain also raised some concerns regarding that incident. Has the management made any decision on this matter? Any comment on Muneeba`s run-out?
Baig: I believe Muneeba`s run-out issue has already been settled. I don`t wish to discuss it much further at this moment. Whatever occurred and whatever the situation entailed, I consider it to be resolved.
Further adding to the discussion, former Australian cricketer Mel Jones provided an on-air explanation of the MCC Law 30.1.2, which outlines conditions under which a batter is not considered out of their ground. She quoted the specific wording of the law:
`A batter shall not be considered to be out of her ground in running or diving towards her ground and beyond, and having grounded some part of her bat, the bat beyond the popping crease, there is subsequent loss of contact between the ground and any part of her person or bat, or between the bat and the person.`
Jones then clarified her interpretation, stating: “So, she wasn`t running, she wasn`t diving. And because of that fact, there was no running or diving, that is the reason why she`s been given out.” This explanation highlighted that since Muneeba was not actively performing the actions (running or diving) specified in the protective clause of the law, she did not qualify for the exemption, thereby validating the umpire`s decision to give her out.
In the overall context of the game, India ultimately secured a comprehensive victory over Pakistan, winning the match by a margin of 88 runs.
