Paraguay`s duo, Denisse Alvarez and Fiorella Nunez, thrilled local spectators at the Junior Pan American Games in Asuncion by securing a bronze medal in women`s beach volleyball. This notable achievement was bolstered by crucial support from the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment program. This initiative also proved beneficial for other nations, with Cuba earning a bronze in men`s volleyball at the same Games, and the Dominican Republic previously clinching the women`s indoor volleyball bronze.

FIVB Empowerment`s Impact on Paraguayan Beach Volleyball

The national beach volleyball teams of Paraguay have received substantial financial backing through FIVB Volleyball Empowerment, totaling USD 336,000 for coach support. Brazilian coach Ricardo Cesar Souza Da Silva recently contributed his expertise to the team. Additionally, Paraguay`s national federation received an extra USD 12,000 for national team coach development programs and USD 11,000 for essential beach volleyball equipment.

Alvarez and Nunez`s Path to Bronze

At the Junior Pan American Games in the Paraguayan capital, Denisse Alvarez and Fiorella Nunez finished as runners-up in Pool A, behind the eventual champions Emma Donley and Portia Sherman. They then navigated a challenging route through the elimination rounds to reach the semifinals. Despite suffering a 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) upset against Venezuela`s Sara Lopez and Darlin Veronica Rodriguez, they demonstrated resilience, bouncing back with a triumphant 2-1 (21-14, 19-21, 15-6) victory over Canada`s Jaeya Brach and Sophia Hladyniuk to proudly claim their bronze medal.

In the other semifinal, Donley and Sherman secured a 2-0 (22-20, 21-17) win over Brach and Hladyniuk. They went on to clinch the gold medal with a dominant 2-0 (21-16, 21-10) sweep in the final against Sara and Rodriguez, completing their tournament run undefeated across six matches.

Men`s Beach Volleyball Highlights

The gold medal in men’s beach volleyball was won by the American team of Gage Basey and Thomas Hurst. They didn`t drop a single set in their four matches leading up to the semifinals. Their successful campaign culminated in two hard-fought tie-breaker victories: 2-1 (22-24, 21-16, 15-11) against Venezuela’s Enyenser Delgado and Juliangel Zaid in the semifinals, and a decisive 2-1 (21-11, 16-21, 15-7) triumph over Brazil’s Isac Farias and Jose Jonathan Heleno de Menezes in the final.

Isac and Jonathan also reached the final undefeated, marking a five-game winning streak that included a close 2-0 (23-21, 22-20) semifinal victory over Argentina’s Marcos Ezequiel Gonzalez and Fausto Inostroza. The bronze medal was secured by Enyenser and Juliangel, who made a strong comeback from a set down in the third-place match to defeat Gonzalez and Inostroza 2-1 (13-21, 21-16, 15-10).

The beach volleyball competition at the Junior Pan American Games in Asuncion featured 16 women’s and 16 men’s teams, representing a total of 19 NORCECA and CSV member countries.

Cuba`s Journey to Men`s Indoor Volleyball Bronze

The Cuban Volleyball Federation received USD 35,000 in FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support for their men’s national teams, benefiting from the expertise of statistician Rusber Campos. In the men’s indoor volleyball tournament, the Cuban selection finished third in Pool B, then advanced to the quarterfinals where they achieved a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-22) win over Colombia. In a thrilling semifinal, Cuba pushed Brazil to five sets but ultimately lost in the tie-breaker, 3-2 (14-25, 25-17, 26-24, 23-25, 15-11). They then secured the bronze medal with a fantastic 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-23) comeback victory over Pool A winners Mexico in the third-place match.

Men`s Indoor Volleyball Final and Awards

Pool B winners Brazil and runners-up Argentina, who convincingly swept the other semifinal against Mexico 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-23), met again in the final for a captivating five-set battle. The gold medal showdown ended 3-2 (22-25, 25-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-3) in favor of Brazil, who twice came back from a set deficit to lift the trophy. In the final standings, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Guatemala, and host nation Paraguay finished fifth through eighth, respectively.

Brazil’s 21-year-old opposite and captain, Samuel Carazzai, was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament and also received the Best Server award. The `Dream Team` included: setter Ezequiel Vazquez (Argentina), opposite Jhon Mosquera (Colombia), outside hitters Yusniel Gonzalez (Cuba) and Maicon Dos Santos (Brazil), middle blockers Milton Martinez (Paraguay) and Moises Ortiz (Dominican Republic), and libero Mariano Gomez (Paraguay).
