Patchy Mix Battled Illness and Infection Before Controversial UFC 320 Loss, Reveals Ex-Champion

Sports News

Patchy Mix recently faced his second straight defeat this past weekend in Las Vegas. While many fighters struggle to replicate their success from other promotions in the UFC, Mix`s case is particularly notable. Having joined the UFC as one of the most promising bantamweights, Mix drew significant criticism after his initial loss at UFC 316.

The ex-Bellator standout aimed for redemption at UFC 320, benefiting from a complete training camp. However, following his contentious defeat, it has emerged that his preparations were plagued by numerous issues.

Patchy Mix Reportedly Battled a Tough Weight Cut, Illness, and Staph Infection Ahead of UFC 320

During the UFC 320 prelims, Patchy Mix sustained a severe eye injury en route to a split decision loss against Jakub Wiklacz. Despite a very close bout where many felt Mix had won two of three rounds, he once again departed the Octagon without a victory. Beyond the results, the nature of his performances has led some to speculate about the longevity of Mix`s UFC career.

Former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, present in Las Vegas during fight week, recently disclosed on the JAXXON Podcast that Mix was grappling with significant challenges. Dillashaw expressed surprise at Mix`s condition after a difficult weight cut, further detailing other problems the fighter faced.

“He just did not look good when we were going to ceremonial weigh-ins… He’s like laying on the ground, looking like he’s still cutting weight,” Dillashaw recounted. “Then I go to the bathroom, and he runs up to go to the bathroom, says he’s been throwing up since weigh-ins. He can’t keep anything down. He’s sick. It’s probably a little bit of nerves, too, but he couldn’t hold nothing down. Then he’s talking about how he had staph for the last two weeks, he’s been on antibiotics. So, it didn’t sound like camp went that great. When you’re on antibiotics, your cardio is going to suck, and we saw that in the fight.”

TJ Dillashaw Urges Adjustments for Patchy Mix, Acknowledging Health Impact

Once a highly-regarded 20-1 Bellator champion, Patchy Mix has now suffered consecutive decision losses within the UFC Octagon in 2025. Many have noted his underwhelming performances, a point TJ Dillashaw agrees Mix must address.

Nevertheless, Dillashaw conceded that many of these technical deficiencies might stem from his arduous weight cuts and ongoing health battles.

“On the technical side of things, I’d really like to see Patchy Mix evolve,” Dillashaw commented. “I would need to start seeing him moving his head. He doesn’t have any head motion. He kind of stands in front of you a little bit and just plots forward. His jiu-jitsu is good. I could see some more feints, some more head motion, be a little more snappy on his punches, but unfortunately he was so tired that his punches didn’t have it. The first thing that goes away when you get tired is your feints and your movement.”
