R. Ashwin Brands Harshit Rana’s Bowling “Amateurish” While India Gears Up for Asia Cup Final

Cricket News

India faced an unexpected challenge against Sri Lanka in their final warm-up fixture leading up to the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side initially posted a commanding total of 202 runs while batting first. However, a superb century from Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka dramatically pushed the match into a Super Over, exposing some chinks in India`s bowling armor. Pacer Harshit Rana, who was included in the squad as a replacement for the crucial Jasprit Bumrah, endured a difficult spell, conceding 54 runs in his allotted four overs and managing only a solitary wicket. His performance immediately drew sharp criticism from former Indian cricketing stalwart, R. Ashwin.

Ashwin`s Candid Assessment: “Truly Amateurish”

Speaking openly on his popular YouTube channel, `Ash Ki Baat`, Ashwin specifically addressed Harshit Rana`s bowling display. He acknowledged the inherent difficulties faced by young players with fluctuating match opportunities, stating:

I just want to speak about Harshit Rana. He has played a few games, and then he hasn`t. It`s not easy to play one match and then sit out; it can be quite disheartening for your confidence and also make you a bit rusty. However, the mistakes Harshit made against Sri Lanka were truly amateurish.

Ashwin further elaborated on the tactical errors he observed in Rana`s approach during the match:

I initially thought the game was already done during the powerplay, but India staged an excellent comeback after that. Harshit Rana was bowling at pace, hitting the batsman on the head, and then immediately followed it up with a slower ball. Nissanka capitalized beautifully on this. Harshit`s tendency to bowl slower deliveries right after a fast-paced one, alternating between a fast and a slow ball, is a very amateurish way of playing cricket. He should really learn from this experience.
