At the recent Europe’s Small Countries Association (SCA) Beach Volleyball Championships, hosted in Ayr, Scotland showcased a dominant performance, claiming a clean sweep of the women`s podium. The pairs of Lynne Beattie & Mhairi Wallace, Kathryn Barbour & Alexis Crusey, and Alexandra Clegg-Mckeown & Melissa Coutts secured gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. The host nation also celebrated significant success in the men`s division, with James McHardy & Ross McKelvie earning gold by defeating compatriots Euan Mackenzie Fraser & Ben McHardy. The only non-Scottish medal was the men`s bronze, secured by Monaco`s Pascal Ferry & Vincent Ferry.
This strong showing was notably supported by the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment program. The Scottish Volleyball Association has received USD 126,000 in funding specifically for national beach volleyball coach support, with Rachael Gunn from New Zealand and Seain Cook currently guiding the teams. Additionally, USD 6,000 has been allocated for a national team coaches development knowledge transfer program, further investing in their expertise.
Lynne Beattie and Mhairi Wallace, the home favorites, navigated the women`s tournament impeccably, reaching the final in Ayr without dropping a single set. Their flawless run included a decisive 2-0 (21-9, 21-18) victory in the semifinal against Northern Ireland`s Tara Mooney & Grace Allen.
Similarly, Kathryn Barbour & Alexis Crusey advanced to the semifinals undefeated. Although they lost their first set of the tournament there, they ultimately prevailed in a thrilling three-set match, winning 2-1 (15-21, 23-21, 15-11) against fellow Scottish pair Alexandra Clegg-Mckeown & Melissa Coutts.
The all-Scottish gold medal clash proved to be a dramatic three-set battle, concluding 2-1 (21-9, 23-25, 16-14) in favor of Beattie & Wallace. To complete the clean sweep of the women`s podium, Clegg-Mckeown & Coutts secured the bronze by defeating Mooney & Allen 2-0 (21-15, 21-11).

The journey to men`s gold was more challenging for James McHardy & Ross McKelvie. Despite winning all four of their matches in Ayr, three of these required tie-breaker resolutions. Their semifinal victory, a 2-1 (16-21, 21-17, 15-8) comeback, was against Monaco’s Pascal Ferry & Vincent Ferry.
In contrast, Euan Mackenzie Fraser & Ben McHardy enjoyed a perfect run to the gold medal showdown, winning four consecutive matches in straight sets. Their semifinal match saw them achieve a convincing 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) shutout against Conor Robins & Matthew Pollock of Wales.
The men`s final was a fiercely contested three-set encounter. McHardy & McKelvie ultimately secured the zonal title with a 2-1 (17-21, 22-20, 15-10) turnaround victory. In the bronze medal match, Ferry & Ferry defeated Robins & Pollock by 2-0 (21-17, 21-18).
