Shashi Tharoor Calls for Sportsmanship in India-Pakistan Cricket Amidst Controversy

As India and Pakistan are expected to clash in the Asia Cup final this Sunday, Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor offered his perspective on the dispute involving Indian cricketers` reluctance to shake hands with their Pakistani rivals during the competition. Speaking to ANI, Tharoor emphasized that although anti-Pakistan sentiments are comprehensible, the essence of sportsmanship ought to be distinct from political and military tensions.

“My personal conviction is that once the commitment to play was made, if our feelings towards Pakistan were so intense, we shouldn`t have played at all. However, if we choose to compete, it must be done in the true spirit of the game, which includes shaking hands. We have a precedent for this: in 1999, amidst the Kargil War, on the very day soldiers were making the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, we were playing Pakistan in the World Cup in England. Even then, handshakes were exchanged, recognizing that the spirit of sport is separate from interstate or military dynamics. That remains my stance.”

The veteran Congress leader additionally observed that the responses from both teams reflected a deficiency in sportsmanship. He elaborated, “If, after feeling disrespected initially, the Pakistani team chose to reciprocate with an insult, it indicates a mutual absence of true sportsmanship.”

Last Thursday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially filed a grievance against Pakistani cricketers Sahibzada Farhan and Haris Rauf concerning their unsuitable behavior during the intense Asia Cup Super Four match on September 21st.

Sources within the BCCI confirmed that a complaint has been submitted to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and match referee Andy Pycroft. The Indian squad is seeking stringent penalties for both players, asserting that their actions exceeded the boundaries of acceptable conduct during play.

During Pakistan`s batting innings, opening batsman Sahibzada Farhan`s controversial celebration of his half-century—by mimicking holding a gun with his bat—drew widespread condemnation as both insensitive and inflammatory.

Subsequently in the game, fast bowler Haris Rauf faced criticism for several actions. Following the dismissal of Sanju Samson, Rauf displayed aggressive conduct. Furthermore, while positioned near the boundary, he reacted to taunts from Indian fans by raising his fingers to signify “0-6,” alluding to Pakistan`s unsubstantiated assertions of having shot down six Indian fighter jets during a four-day border engagement subsequent to India`s Operation Sindoor in May.

Rauf`s gesture quickly gained traction, with videos of his actions becoming widely circulated on social media. The 31-year-old received considerable backlash from many Indian supporters, who derided and mocked him for his behavior. During this event, fans provoked Rauf with “Virat Kohli” chants, recalling how the iconic batsman had struck two consecutive sixes off him during a thrilling 160-run pursuit in Melbourne at the T20 World Cup 2022, a particular shot that the ICC notably hailed as the `Shot of the Century`.

Notably, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had previously filed two formal complaints with the ICC against India`s captain, Suryakumar Yadav. The PCB`s objection stemmed from Yadav`s post-match remarks on September 14 concerning the Pahalgam incident, which they perceived as politicizing the issue.

India decisively defeated Pakistan in their two encounters, thereby securing a spot in the Asia Cup finals. There is an anticipation that these two rivals could meet once more in Sunday`s championship match.
