Shubman Gill Discusses India’s New Pitch Strategy for West Indies Test Series

Cricket News

India`s Test captain, Shubman Gill, indicated on Wednesday that the team is shifting its approach regarding pitches for home matches. Moving away from a preference for heavily spinning tracks, India aims to play on surfaces that offer equitable assistance to both batsmen and bowlers. During a press conference held the day before the Test series against West Indies, Gill also hinted at the possibility of deploying a third fast bowler in the series opener, given the green-top appearance of the venue and the prevailing hot and humid conditions.

“I cannot comment on previous discussions before I took over as captain, but we are certainly looking to play on wickets that offer assistance to both batsmen and bowlers,” Gill stated.

He elaborated, “However, it`s understood that any team visiting India expects to face challenges from spin and reverse swing. Keeping these factors in mind, we still intend to use pitches that benefit both batting and bowling.”

Regarding the team combination, Gill added, “The final combination will be revealed tomorrow (Thursday). Considering the current weather and pitch conditions, we are contemplating a third fast-bowling option, but a decision will be made tomorrow.”

Commitment to Grinding Cricket

Gill emphasized India`s intention to play “hard and disciplined cricket” on home soil. He further explained, “We plan to play tough, gritty cricket. In recent years, Test matches in India haven`t often lasted the full five days, so our goal is to engage in robust, challenging cricket.”

“Fans can expect us to play hard-fought, grinding cricket. We won`t seek easy solutions, as we possess the necessary skills to perform effectively on any type of pitch or in any given situation,” Gill affirmed.

Switching Formats: A Mental Challenge

The captain also acknowledged that several players, including himself, had very little time to transition between formats after the demanding, yet victorious, Asia Cup T20 campaign, which concluded in Dubai on Sunday.

“We had only a couple of practice days before the Test match, so it was indeed a quick transition. My focus was on defense and getting into the right mental state. I believe switching formats is more about mental adjustment than technical changes, so I concentrated on getting `in the zone`,” Gill said.

Gill, who had an impressive run of 754 runs in five Tests against England, admitted that adapting to Test cricket after playing the shortest format is particularly challenging. He clarified, “Moving from the shortest format to the longest is arguably the most difficult. Shifting from T20s to One-Day Internationals and then to Tests is probably easier than going from Tests to T20s, or T20s directly to Tests.”

“My approach is simply to get into the zone. For me, that `zone` means watching the ball closely and clearly defining which areas I will defend and which I will attack as a batsman. It`s about identifying those specific areas, and then the mental aspect comes into play – how much self-control and patience one has to consistently stick to that strategy,” Gill concluded.

Player Workload and Jadeja`s Role

Gill and star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah were among the players who rejoined the squad after their return from Dubai. When asked about managing Bumrah`s workload, Gill stated, “We will assess his usage on a match-by-match basis, depending on the duration of a Test match and the number of overs our fast bowlers bowl. Nothing is decided beforehand. We will make a decision after each Test match, based on how our fast bowlers feel and the condition of their bodies.”

Gill confirmed that Ravindra Jadeja would retain his No. 6 batting position, commending the seasoned all-rounder for his “outstanding” consistency in Test cricket.

“We always knew that playing `Jaddu bhai` (Jadeja) in India is a tough challenge for opponents. However, his recent batting form is the key reason he has become our No. 6 batsman in Test matches. For the past two years, he has been in exceptional form, rescuing us from difficult situations. To have someone with his vast experience and to maintain such high consistency at this level for so long is truly remarkable,” Gill remarked, praising Jadeja.
