Shubman Gill Emphasizes Giving Nitish Kumar Reddy Crucial Game Time in Test Cricket

Cricket News

Ahead of the second Test match against West Indies, India`s Test captain Shubman Gill stated that promising young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy possesses `significant potential and ability.` Gill emphasized the team management`s desire to provide Reddy with maximum exposure and match practice, particularly in home conditions, to aid his development after an impressive performance during India`s tour of Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The upcoming second Test between India and West Indies is scheduled to commence on Friday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. A central point of discussion leading up to this fixture is the extent of match involvement 22-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy will receive. During the inaugural Test, Reddy did not have an opportunity to bat and bowled merely four overs, yielding 16 runs.

Reddy made a remarkable impression during his debut series in Australia, showcasing his fearless attacking style against top bowlers. He accumulated 298 runs across nine innings at an average of 37.25, including a standout century (114) in the Boxing Day Test. This performance positioned him as India`s second-highest scorer in the series, complemented by five wickets from 44 overs bowled.

Subsequently, during a tour of England, Nitish managed 45 runs from four innings, with his top score being 30. He also claimed three wickets over two matches.

Addressing the topic of Reddy`s playing time, Gill elaborated during the pre-match press conference: “Discussions have certainly taken place regarding this. We currently face a deficit of third or fourth seam bowling options, especially on pitches abroad that favor pace bowlers. It would be unjust to restrict his opportunities solely to overseas tours. Given that our upcoming schedule doesn`t feature many away series over the next eighteen months, limiting him to foreign conditions would severely curtail his playing chances. We require a player who can consistently deliver 10-15 overs daily and contribute with the bat. His batting prowess in Australia was evident, underscoring his considerable talent and future promise.”

He further added, “Therefore, our aim is to maximize his match exposure, particularly on Indian soil, and assist him in his growth. We will strategically consider his batting position, whether higher or lower in the order, based on specific match conditions and situational demands.”

Gill acknowledged that while providing opportunities to Nitish is crucial, equally important is fielding the `best playing XI` to secure vital points for India`s qualification in the ICC World Test Championship final, especially after narrowly missing out previously and finishing as runners-up on two occasions.

The captain also expressed high praise for seasoned all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, describing his inclusion as a `significant advantage.` In the recent Test, Jadeja earned the `Player of the Match` award for his stellar performance, which included scoring a century and taking four wickets.

Gill elaborated on Jadeja`s value, stating, “To have a player of his calibre, capable of batting at number six in Test matches, is invaluable. His exceptional batting quality on spinning wickets is well-documented. This, I believe, is precisely why he currently holds the rank of the world`s number one all-rounder. We are incredibly fortunate to have him in our squad. His fielding prowess – his accurate throws, sharp catches, and sheer intensity – is universally recognized. Time and again, when he has the ball, batsmen hesitate to attempt a risky second run.”

Nearing the milestone of 4,000 Test runs, Ravindra Jadeja has been in exceptional batting form this year, accumulating 659 runs across seven Tests at an impressive average of 82.37. His tally includes two centuries and five half-centuries from 13 innings, with his highest score being an unbeaten 107.

However, his bowling average increased to 53.45, largely influenced by a less productive tour of England where pitch conditions were not consistently favorable to his style. Despite this, Jadeja has secured 11 wickets in these seven Tests, including two instances of taking four wickets in an innings. With batting statistics that rival those of specialist batsmen, Jadeja has undeniably been a dominant force this season. The forthcoming home Test series later this year and into early 2026 will be particularly pivotal for him and the team.
