The Indian cricket team secured a historic ninth Asia Cup title by defeating Pakistan in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. However, the celebratory moment was overshadowed by a significant controversy as the Suryakumar Yadav-led squad declined to accept the championship trophy and winners` medals from Mohsin Naqvi, the head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
Naqvi, who also serves as a Pakistani minister and the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, was present on the podium with other officials during the presentation ceremony. Despite his presence, the Indian team collectively refused to approach the stage for the official award distribution.
In response to India`s refusal, Naqvi reportedly decided to cancel the entire presentation ceremony, leaving the stadium with both the trophy and medals. Following this incident, Indian players, including Suryakumar Yadav, took to social media to subtly criticize Naqvi`s actions, sharing pictures with a creatively fabricated “fake trophy” as a symbolic protest, joined by their teammates.
Match Overview: India`s Path to Victory
The Asia Cup final saw India clinch victory with a five-wicket win over Pakistan on Sunday in Dubai. Chasing a target of 147 runs, India`s top-order faced an early collapse, stumbling to 20/3 within the fourth over of the powerplay. It was **Tilak Varma** who played a pivotal role in stabilizing the innings and injecting the crucial momentum needed to guide India towards the winning line.
Varma expertly managed the run-flow alongside Sanju Samson and then accelerated the scoring rate with Shivam Dube, effectively dismantling Pakistan`s strong position. He achieved his fourth T20I half-century off 41 balls and remained unbeaten with a superb 69 runs off 53 deliveries, leading India to a five-wicket triumph and Asia Cup glory.
Post-Match Presentation Controversy
The post-match presentation ceremony was significantly delayed, extending beyond an hour. When it eventually commenced, Indian players came forward to collect their individual accolades. Dignitaries on stage presented individual awards to **Kuldeep Yadav**, **Abhishek Sharma**, and **Tilak Varma**. In contrast, Salman received the runners-up cheque from PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
Throughout these proceedings, the Indian players notably did not acknowledge Naqvi. Similarly, the ACC chairman did not applaud the Indian cricketers receiving their personal honors. Simon Doull, serving as the presenter for the host broadcaster, formally confirmed the situation towards the end of the ceremony: “I have been informed by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that the Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight. So that does conclude the post-match presentation.”
The reasons behind India`s unprecedented refusal were later clarified by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. He confirmed that the team had indeed declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC Chairman Naqvi, citing his dual role as Pakistan`s interior minister as the underlying issue.
