Tilak Varma Addresses ‘Operation Tilak’ Moniker After Asia Cup Final Heroics

Tilak Varma, the standout performer in India`s Asia Cup 2025 final victory, has downplayed the “Operation Tilak” moniker that became popular on social media following his match-winning performance against Pakistan in Sunday`s decisive clash. Fans and pundits praised Varma online for expertly guiding India`s chase with remarkable composure and flair, especially after the team found itself struggling at 20/3 in pursuit of 147 runs. The 22-year-old left-hander scored an unbeaten 69, securing a five-wicket win for India over Pakistan, despite admitting he faced initial pressure and verbal exchanges from Pakistani players.

During a press conference held in Hyderabad, Tilak addressed the viral “Operation Tilak” tag. He also highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously referred to India`s win over Pakistan as “Operation Sindoor on the games field.”

“Firstly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it Operation Sindoor, but for it to be called Operation Tilak is a significant honor. In sports, we represent our nation. I seized the opportunity at the right moment and time. I feel immense pride in having contributed to my country,”

stated Tilak, who received a warm welcome from fans upon his arrival in Hyderabad on Monday.

The young cricketer suggested that India`s victory was a direct result of building strong partnerships on what was undeniably a challenging batting pitch.

“I concur with Surya bhai`s sentiment of `no rivalry,` but this is sports, and we anticipated that they would be well-prepared for the final. We were ready for their change of pace and the difficult batting conditions. We forged effective partnerships, won the match, and are very proud of our achievement,”

he remarked.

Regarding comparisons to Virat Kohli, often referred to as the renowned “chase master,” the 22-year-old maintained a humble perspective.

“It`s always a source of pride to be mentioned alongside a legend like Virat bhai. However, my primary focus remains on securing victories for the nation,”

he concluded.
