Miami Heat`s guard Tyler Herro is scheduled for foot surgery this Friday and will consequently miss the beginning of the 2025-26 season, according to various reports. While a precise timeline for Herro`s return is still unknown, the injury is not anticipated to end his season prematurely.
The Miami Herald reported that the 25-year-old Herro experienced discomfort in his left ankle during offseason workouts. In an effort to avoid surgery before training camp, which starts on September 30, Herro recently received `platelet-rich plasma and cortisone injections.` However, the pain persisted, making surgery the recommended course of action.
Last season, Herro achieved career bests with 23.9 points and 5.5 assists per game, alongside a career-high 47.2% field goal percentage. He led the Heat in scoring, shooting 37.5% from three-point range, and earned his inaugural All-Star selection. Herro, whose salary for this season is $31 million, will become eligible for a contract extension on October 1.
With Herro sidelined for the start of what would be his seventh NBA season, the Heat will rely on veteran guard Norman Powell, playing alongside Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, and Kel`el Ware. Powell, who is expected to fill Herro`s starting role, was acquired in a three-team trade involving the Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz over the summer. Powell is recognized as one of the league`s top perimeter shooters, having made 41.8% of his long-range attempts last season, marking the third time in four seasons he has achieved at least 40% from beyond the arc.
The Heat, holding the tenth-best odds to win the Eastern Conference, were eliminated from the NBA playoffs in the first round for the second consecutive year, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games. Miami`s season is scheduled to commence on October 22 against the Orlando Magic.
