The highly anticipated return of UFC icon Wanderlei Silva after a seven-year absence from competition turned out to be nothing short of a catastrophe. At 48 years old, Silva had been out of combat sports since his knockout loss to Quinton `Rampage` Jackson at Bellator 206 in September 2018.
His comeback bout, an exhibition match at Spaten Fight Night 2, saw him face Acelino Freitas, a celebrated former two-time world boxing champion with a 41-2 record. Despite `The Axe Murderer` holding a significant 44-pound weight advantage, this did not translate into success during their Saturday night encounter.

Silva`s Controversial Comeback Bout
During the initial two rounds, Freitas, the far more experienced boxer, largely controlled the action against Silva. In response to being outclassed, the MMA veteran resorted to illegal tactics against Acelino Freitas, seemingly attempting to revert to his earlier, more aggressive style.
After persistent headbutts led to a two-point deduction, Silva was ultimately disqualified from the contest. The official brought an end to the fight at 1:34 in the fourth round, having witnessed enough of the infractions.
Following the stoppage, chaos erupted in the ring as members from both corners engaged in a violent exchange of punches. Amidst the melee, Silva was struck by a powerful hook from an unidentified individual, rendering him unconscious on the canvas.
The Unfulfilled Showdown: Silva vs. Belfort
The original plan for Spaten Fight Night 2 was for Wanderlei Silva to face his long-time rival, Vitor Belfort. Their previous encounter in MMA at UFC Brazil in 1998 saw Belfort dispatch Silva with a 44-second knockout.
However, `The Axe Murderer` was denied his opportunity for revenge when Belfort pulled out of the highly anticipated rematch. `The Phenom` cited two training concussions as his reason for withdrawal, a claim his long-standing adversary, Silva, found difficult to believe.
“He needs to embody the principles he constantly preaches. He speaks of strength, perseverance, and optimism, yet his actions contradict these words. This highlights the crucial role of mental fortitude for an athlete. A competitor must possess self-confidence and a belief in their capabilities. They should look in the mirror and declare, ‘I am a lion! I am a lion!’ Or perhaps, anything else, right? Seek professional help, undergo therapy, right? Nevertheless, this fight is slated for next year. As I affirmed, I would be present on the 27th, and indeed I am. I will be here again next time, and on that occasion, I sincerely hope he doesn`t retreat.”
