UFC Lightweight Renato Moicano Admits Relief After Skipping Charles Oliveira Fight at UFC Rio

Sports News

Charles Oliveira displayed his peak form during his recent triumphant return to Brazil. His winning performance against Mateusz Gamrot garnered high praise from experts like Joe Rogan.

At UFC Rio, the former lightweight champion extended his record for most finishes in UFC history, delivering Gamrot the first stoppage loss of his career.

However, some wondered if the outcome would have been the same had Oliveira faced his originally scheduled opponent. One fighter who had shown interest in stepping in before Gamrot was confirmed now believes he was fortunate to have missed the opportunity.

Renato Moicano: Fighting Charles Oliveira in Rio Would Have Been a Bad Decision

When Rafael Fiziev pulled out of the UFC Rio main event against Charles Oliveira, several lightweight contenders expressed readiness to step in as replacements. Oliveira then criticized some of them, claiming they stated they`d take the fight on three weeks` notice but didn`t follow through.

Renato Moicano was among those who expressed interest in facing his compatriot. In a recent episode of the “Show Me The Money” podcast, Moicano admitted that his decision not to fight Oliveira on short notice was correct, especially after witnessing Oliveira`s performance.

“He looked ready. I was saying I `dodged a bullet,` brother, because taking that fight on three weeks` notice, with no training, would not have been good. But, as I say, Rafael Fiziev`s style is completely different.”

Moicano also noted that his decision could have turned out differently if Oliveira`s quick turnaround concerns had affected him on October 11. “Of course, if he looked bad, I would say, `Man, that was easy money.` That`s just how it works.”

Renato Moicano Doesn`t See Charles Oliveira Winning His Next Targeted Bout

After an impressive return to the win column, Charles Oliveira clearly stated his desired next opponent. His callout quickly drew a response from BMF champion Max Holloway, setting the stage for a potential rematch between the two over a decade after their initial encounter.

While Renato Moicano is a big fan of this potential fight, he doesn`t believe Oliveira will emerge victorious.

“He`s not beating Max Holloway, maybe I`m just being a hater.”
