UFC Star Slams Brawl After Wanderlei Silva’s KO: “Damage Done to Brazilian Combat Sports”

Sports News

A UFC fighter believes that a recent chaotic post-fight brawl has significantly harmed the reputation of combat sports in Brazil.

On September 27, Wanderlei Silva controversially returned to combat sports, participating in an exhibition boxing match seven years after his last appearance in mixed martial arts.

The revered Pride and UFC icon faced Acelino Freitas, a two-time Brazilian boxing champion, at Spaten Fight Night 2. The announcement of this bout earlier in the year was met with considerable opposition, as many were reluctant to see the 49-year-old Silva compete again.

Indeed, a disturbing incident unfolded, though surprisingly, it occurred outside the actual fight.

Caio Borralho Expresses Frustration Over Spaten Fight Night Brawl After Wanderlei Silva`s Disqualification

Wanderlei Silva was ultimately knocked unconscious during the event, not by his opponent, but by his opponent`s son amidst a chaotic post-fight altercation. `The Axe Murderer` had been disqualified for recurrently head-butting Freitas, which then prompted both teams to storm the ring and exchange blows after the contentious ending.

The brawl was eventually halted as medical staff attended to the unconscious Silva, but the ensuing controversy has led to intense criticism for all involved.

UFC middleweight contender Caio Borralho is among those strongly condemning the events at ARCA Spaces in Sao Paulo. The “Fighting Nerds” representative harshly criticized the participants, implying that the brawl would severely damage how combat sports are viewed in Brazil for years to come.

“Has our sport been striving all this time for people to regard us as decent and civilized individuals, only for this to happen?” Borralho questioned on X.

He further elaborated, “Imagine being a fighter now, seeking sponsorship from a major Brazilian brand, and this disgrace from today serves as their reference point? The athletes stand to lose immensely because of this.”

Wanderlei Silva`s Manager Provides Positive Health Update

Despite the alarming scene in the ring before security regained control of the brawl, a reassuring update regarding Silva`s condition has been released.

According to a report by Combate, Silva`s manager stated that the Pride legend was hospitalized “as a precautionary measure,” and subsequent CT scans of his head and cervical spine revealed no substantial injuries.

This positive health report for Silva was a relief, especially considering the brutal nature of the knockout punch. The blow left `The Axe Murderer` severely bruised and bleeding heavily, requiring three towels to clean the blood-stained canvas.

However, while the Brazilian fighter appears to have avoided immediate severe injury from this particular blow, it`s notable that this knockout occurred just a year after Silva publicly disclosed concerning symptoms of brain trauma in a document supporting the UFC antitrust settlement.
