Volleyball’s Impact: World Volleyball Day and Community Empowerment

Sports News

The remarkable success of the inaugural World Volleyball Day, held on July 7, was significantly amplified by the active participation and contributions of FIVB`s partners and stakeholders worldwide.

Comprising 222 National Federations (NFs), five Continental Confederations, and 22 Zonal Associations, the global volleyball movement spans every corner of the planet, with many members actively participating in World Volleyball Day.

Their collective efforts not only broadened the event`s reach but also delivered tangible results in education, sustainable development, youth participation, and cultural enrichment.

Extensive celebrations took place across all National Federations of the Asian Volleyball Confederation. For instance, the Volleyball Federation of the Philippines highlighted volleyball`s unifying and inspiring power with a special event at the SM Mall of Asia Globe, aiming to uplift the nation and bring communities together.

The Bhutan Volleyball Federation commemorated the occasion at the Changlimithang Volleyball Arena in Thimphu by launching the 2025 School Volley Cup. This three-day tournament attracted 550 students from 15 districts and aimed to boost youth involvement in the sport nationwide.

The Nepal Volleyball Association hosted a volleyball festival that gathered hundreds, celebrating community engagement and the sport`s role in daily life. The Volleyball Association of Jammu and Kashmir arranged exhibition matches and guest lectures, combining sports with community empowerment.

Furthermore, on July 7, an FIVB team was on an official visit to Palau, where World Volleyball Day celebrations were in full swing. The day featured a vibrant beach volleyball showcase, bringing together the local volleyball community and athletes participating in the Pacific Mini Games. The event fostered a festive and inclusive atmosphere, with players, fans, and youth all uniting around the shared joy of the sport.

The day`s festivities were also covered by ANOC TV, the media platform of the Association of National Olympic Committees. In an interview, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo expressed his joy at witnessing children enjoying beach volleyball against the stunning natural backdrop of Palau.

Across the Americas, NORCECA extended World Volleyball Day into a week-long series of activities, continuing until July 13. Their coordinated regional efforts illustrated how federations are leveraging this day to build long-term awareness and foster connections across national borders.

In Europe, alongside the sport receiving presidential recognition, with France`s Olympic volleyball champions honored at the Élysée Palace, National Federations across the continent marked the day by highlighting the sport`s profound importance in transforming people`s lives.

Meanwhile, National Federations across South America celebrated the day on their online platforms, acknowledging the sport`s widespread appeal to all ages.

Similarly, in Africa, many National Federations reminded their followers of volleyball`s power to strengthen bonds and inspire others, both on and off the court.

The FIVB Volleyball Foundation and its certified projects also participated, leveraging the occasion to promote ongoing initiatives in education, equality, and sustainability. For instance, the Brahmaputra Volleyball League adopted a unique approach, blending celebration with action. As part of their World Volleyball Day activities, over 1,000 children planted more than 1,500 trees across Assam, linking sports with sustainable development and long-term community investment. Their work continues to showcase how volleyball can serve as a platform for positive societal change.

Professional players also joined the celebrations, with many sharing their reflections on social media. For example, Australian three-time Olympian Kerri Pottharst shared a personal message, contemplating how deeply the sport has shaped her life and identity, stating:

“From that moment so long ago… to now… and with so much more to come. My life truly is this sport and everyone I’ve met along the way… and this sport and everyone truly is my life.”
